TriNet really doesn't want you to maintain COBRA insurance coverage:- They will not send payment reminders. If you forget, the policy's cancelled.- It's up to you to remember how much to pay them. If you don't pay them the right amount, the policy's cancelled.- If your payment method doesn't go through, like you mis-type your card or checking account number, the policy's cancelled. You better believe I've set a monthly reminder.

@sungo Ugh. Mine's not due for another 9 days, so I have time to prod them if I have to.

@tek In Europe, this would be illegal in so many ways. Firstly, our health insurance is organized in a completely different way. Secondly, cancelling stuff without a single warning wouldn't fly at all.

@tek Quick sum up of my current insurance level. I'm insured with Barmer, one of the mandatory healthcare providers in Germany. Since I'm technically unemployed, I pay minimum dues, provided by the government. People in employment pay a mandatory amount. Bargain, seeing that the policy covers everything necessary in full. Socialism, boo! Insert your favorite red scare meme here.

@elshoggotho I've said before, but worth repeating:It's impossible to understand how the US health insurance system works and still think it's a good idea, unless you're profiting off of it.

@tek If I ever need to travel abroad, I can get extended coverage for €50 up front. A friend of mine tested it, got full coverage for a hospital stay in the US.

@elshoggotho 🤬🤬🤬Meanwhile, let me introduce you to deductibles, co-pays, coinsurance, “out of network”, "out-of-pocket max”, and other fun bullshit terms governing how much health we can buy.

@elshoggotho Vision plan! Not a mental health plan, though, because that's not a thing and medical insurance barely covers it!

@tek I could tell you a bit about the German situation, but at this point, it feels like kicking a puppy.

@tek I know a few US expats who moved to Berlin for the healthcare, but that's the best I can offer. Taking a joke question seriously because it's customary.

@tek Noted. My employer uses them, so I’ll try to make a point of not needing COBRA if at all possible.
