welcome to linux. your screensaver is set to ‘none’. the display power management settings UI is set to never switch off the screen. and the screen switches off every half an hour. this is because the “real” settings are in 19 bullshit files somewhere, and they all override each other. because it’s linux you can edit all 19 files yourself, it only takes a couple of hours! but by the time you’re done there’s been a package update that resets your changes. it also changed the config file format

@jk I thought this started as a retro-esque 2010 intro to Linux distros but I guess you actually just dealt with that somehow

@jk welcome to windows. "Screensaver" is a concept that no longer exists, but you betcha we still have the same screensaver control panel app hidden somewhere in here if you recite just the right incantation into the Start Menu Super Search Console

@wilbr @jk I can actually launch the legacy screensaver window by just searching for "screensaver" in the Windows 11 Start menu, which allows me to set "black screen" after 1 minute and (I guess) save power on my OLED TV. Except when it randomly does not goes off for no discernable reason.By contrast, never had any trouble with vanilla Fedora Silverblue, but I totally understand what jk is talking about. This shit takes years to get sorted out in the Linux world, but at least we know how to do it.

@ailepet @jk I honestly have no trouble with most of this stuff in stock popular Linux distros, and it boils down to which pain you're familiar with vs unfamiliar. Also a big question of whether you believe you're being sold instant easy customizability and sane upgrade or backwards compatibility paths, which honestly in 2023 is a lie no matter what

@wilbr @ailepet @jk I only learned literally two days ago that KDE 5 (which I've been using on my home desktop for 2 years now) does not even have classic screensavers anymore (just display power management).Apparently screensavers were voted out during the transition from KDE 4 to KDE 5 because, I'm speculating here, every CRT display just blinked out of existence in 2014. I used to have one in my basement, sure am glad I won't have to move that thing ever again because it took care of itself.

@pingviini @wilbr @jk The reasoning was that screens should turn themselves off when unused rather than display pretty stuff (and longtimes issues with Xorg screen locking I guess) Which is sad, but I get why this behavior has been favored. Though last time I checked, xscreensaver was still working on modern Linux desktops (even on Wayland!)

@ailepet @wilbr @jk I bet the real reason was nobody working on KDE wanted to deal with jwz anymore, which I could easily accept as a reason, too
