@jpaskaruk @threatresearch Feel free to read the article:âfallback navigation systems are also corrupted, resulting in total failure.â

@WPalant @threatresearch I was being flip, sorry. Yesterday was a bit of a grumpy day.But there was a point buried in there, which was, perhaps these planes are overly technologized to the point that the technology itself has become hazardous. There was that one some years back, it was some software glitch that caused the damn thing to carry its passengers along at low altitude for miles and then crash, as I recall? Details elude, people did die.

@WPalant @threatresearch We have a much better, more human experience here than on other platforms, even when Jimmy is being an ass. That's got a lot to do with the fact that it's humans, not algos, doing the moderation. There was a point when Reddit was "the last best hope" because they leveraged that same human resource, until they could no longer keep up the scam.I was under the impression that there was a human in control of every plane I've gotten on. Reconsidering future use.

@jpaskaruk @threatresearch There certainly is a human in control, which is why there have been no serious incidents so far. But fact is: air travel is way safer today than it was in the past, thanks to the many systems checking every decision. That is very necessary when traveling at 900 km/h. Fallback plans exist but these arenât a proper replacement. And the article mentions it already: spoofing GPS positions is way more dangerous than merely jamming GPS reception. The airplane crew can deal with the situation, provided that it recognizes the threat. If it doesnât, really bad things might happen.

@WPalant @threatresearch You may be right, but I kinda suspect there's going to be more and worse demonstrations of the hazard I referred to. Power grids and such.As I say so often these days, let's watch.

@WPalant @threatresearch Related entertainment: Avenue 5. Hugh Laurie plays an actor who is hired to play the caption of an interstellar vessel, but all he does is speechify to the passengers, he knows nothing about interstellar travel. This is prophecy, it seems.

@jpaskaruk I was born in a country with a very manual approach to power grid regulation. I remember very regular power outages throughout my entire childhood.Yes, reliance on automated systems has its downsides, such as exposure to hacking attacks. But these automated systems are there for a reason. They do a far better job than humans ever could. And the solution is properly securing them, not putting humans back in charge.
