@rms Perhaps, as renewables take over, the delicate balance will shift somewhat - won't there be periods and locations where there's a surplus of energy even transmission and storage won't cope with (at least for a long time), and so the surplus can be used for things like desalination and direct carbon capture without a negative effect elsewhere?

@rms It's only worthwhile if is done using surplus carbon free energy.In effect it could only run during low load times 6-8 hrs a day.
