I miss Frost OS (spelled, FrostOS). Sadly, DMCA knocked out FrostOS. FrostOS allowed you to natively run BSD, Linux, Apple, and Windows apps all on a single system. As you can easily suspect, it violated so many trademarks and copyright claims.Frost OS was the operating system that truly showed what people were capable of if people truly worked together and there was far less bureaucratic red tape.#FrostBSD #BSD #Linux #Apple #macOS #Windows #DMCA

FrostOS was originally called, Frost BSD (spelled, FrostBSD).I have tried finding a copy, but it has been years since I have seen one. Sadly, some things are lost on the Internet over time. The whole DMCA didn't help either.

@nergal My last copy of FrostOS / FrostBSD was burned on CD. It was a little over 10 years ago.I wish I still had a copy, and the internet isn't forgiving with time. I know they started with BSD, which is why it was originally called, FrostBSD. They built off of that and incorporated a lot of things to get it to run all that stuff natively. It worked, and that was mostly what I or anyone else cared about at the time. I wish I had known more back then and the skills to recreate it.

@Linux_Is_Best given the timeframe, i could theorize some of how it was constructed. much of it is now implemented in hypervisors.

@nergal What I do recall, is it was less reverse engineering and more ripping the code of others and incorporating it into the OS to work together.Obviously, that took some reverse engineering to accomplish. You cannot just slap someone's code with someone else's and hope for the best.I believe they had built some type of interpreter to get everything to communicate. But the fact that it worked at all was impressive. Nevertheless, it violated many copyright laws and trademarks.

@Linux_Is_Best china had done the same around that time. think it was project longene. it used binmisc.d and win32 syscalls atop linux kernel. wine and reactos advanced much through that project.

@nergal I remember being able to install Microsoft Office and Apple iWorks right alongside it. You could use their Frost Desktop or swap it out for KDE, for example. Not only could you download and install pretty much anything, you could easily game with it too.It was just a fun OS.

@Linux_Is_Best https://www.reddit.com/r/linux/comments/c9ux4/this_project_deserves_some_attention_longene_030/ that was the project. initial discussions were to have wine integrated in kernel the fatelf for universal executable, then macos things, them emulate everything else.

@nergal That project used emulators, such a wine. Frost OS just ran things, natively. You didn't lose any performance or experience any graphical issues. Everything was as smooth as it would be if you had installed macOS or Windows or Linux directly.

@Linux_Is_Best that is where the violations were easy to apply. the longene project may have done reverse engineering but only to see how win32 binaries worked.

@nergal Oh yea, it was clearly not legal, and I think that was both interesting and frustrating. It is 2023, soon to be 2024, and we all still need to be sure to run the correct OS for the software we want to run.For example, I use Linux, but I have a VM to run my old Windows games. I cannot even touch any Apple software, and if I want anything else, I may need another VM to support that too. With FrostOS, I just installed. It was so simple and easy and it all just, worked.

@awoodsnet @nergal It ran anything and everything. For example, if I wanted to play an 8-bit game or the latest AAA title, it worked with native support and full hardware acceleration.I could play any media file from virtually any system. They took VLC and really juiced it up.I had the ability to install Microsoft Office, LibreOffice, and Apple iWorks all on the same system.I could switch between iCloud or Drop Box too. You had freedom of choice to use your computer anyway you wanted

@Linux_Is_Best @awoodsnet shoot... this was a child of those huge system codebase leaks. that time when entire core system codebases were torrented. before magnet was a thing and edonkey was the master of p2p.

@nergal @awoodsnet It could have been how they did it. However, it was done, it was awesome and I very much enjoyed it.As I said, I miss FrostOS / FrostBSD.

@awoodsnet @Linux_Is_Best it got buried. recall that mantra in the early days of post y2k bug? ''be careful as nothing gets deleted from the internet''? it was a fallacy. the internet is mainly a vehicle for the web. the web keeps only the things that make a select few profit. anything that put those profits at risk gets deleted. #lolitaexpress #building7 #wikileaks

@awoodsnet @nergal There are many (many) developments that do not receive their due. The nature of open source means often it is "word of mouth" only with no advertisement, plus so many to choose from. There are Linux distros and BSD distros that are not well known, that remain active, and some that are well known, yet are slow to develop. That all said, it wasn't well received outside of consumer use and those willing to turn a blind eye to how they accomplished things.
