Helped my grandfather sort out a few IT issues recently (printer, Kindle, phone etc.) and it struck me just how poorly designed software & hardware are across the board. For the printer problem I had to search for a solution and it took nearly 45 minutes. Several devices said 'oh you can use WPS' with no explanation of what that was (I know, but he didn't). If I wasn't nearby he would have been stuck in frustration indefinitely.

@pwaring 45mins for a printer problem; that's expert-level quick :-) What was it?

@penguin42 He'd changed ISP, which meant his wireless details changed. The printer is wireless and there was no way to input the new wifi details. Eventually I found out how to do a factory reset and use WPS - albeit having to dash up and down stairs to press the button on the router and the printer within the short time frame (several of the problems were resolved by being 'quicker' to land within a short time window, e.g. 2FA codes for Kindle).

@pwaring Running up and down stairs quickly doesn't work well with age. But, yes, using an ISPs wireless router and so having to reconfigure everything on an ISP change is a nightmare. Not done that for a long long long time.

@neil @pwaring Does that work with WPS configured devices?
