@EU_Commission cringe. Also trying to reinvent something without vendors on board is possibly a big waste of money and time. COVID has shown that the possibility to create widely used standards is possible why not use it and create a short lived, shitty, userspace app?

@EU_Commission What of someone does not trust Google and Apple OSes (Android and iOS)? What if someone don't use smartphones over privacy concerns? What if someone boycott companies who make their devices in dictatorship China? Are there any dedicated devices with sole purpose of being used as digital wallet implementation, made in EU?Does it require permanent internet connectivity to work?

@EU_Commission This could have been a great catalyst to digitalization in EU which is both crucial and welcome. However, forcing browsers to support certificate authorities is a categorically bad idea, and designating specific certificates to be automatically approved makes this a blatantly obvious honeypot. It's a shame the @EU_Commission is willing to sacrifice digitalization in what I assume is the guise of security. This trick can be used once, after which anybody who needs to hide, will

@EU_Commission get your hands OFF end to end encryption and certificate trust. Anyone with mal-intent & half a brain can get around the browser restrictions you propose but for everyone else, it's a charter for unjustified snooping and an opportunity for fraud, corruption and incompetence.

@roughconsensusandrunningcode @EU_Commission That definitely needs to go.But on the other side of things, I've seen way too many folk involved with eIDAS to talk about it in terms that are deeply worrying... like using it for access to online services.I know that it's sometimes useful to authenticate strongly with a service, and I have nothing against that practice. But a single identity for everything is also the going to be the most pervasive tracking system ever dreamt up.

@roughconsensusandrunningcode @EU_Commission So we *must* reject any notion of using this outside of, perhaps, government services. And even here, approaches as used by the German tax authority clearly demonstrate (and have been doing for years now) that single identities are not necessary for security. It helps to understand how the threat model underlying authentication works here: you're asking citizens to prove who they are. You only need to prove who you are if lying is a threat.

@roughconsensusandrunningcode @EU_Commission Who might you be lying to here? Some website.Which means the threat model underlying authentication assumes that citizens are the (potential) threat, and website operators need protection from them. This is not in the service of citizens, quite the contrary.

@roughconsensusandrunningcode @EU_Commission (I regularly confuse my bank(s) when they call and ask confidential information; I always tell them unless they can give me information I can verify about who they are, I'll hang up.It's frustrating everyone, but it does show clearly that the threat is to me, not to them.)

@roughconsensusandrunningcode @EU_Commission So, an identity system, nice, but for what? Not for me.It's designed to protect the state from citizens, and that's exactly how a democracy doesn't work.

@EU_Commission I can see a real use for this in Sweden. Currently there is a standard eID, which it is very hard to practically live without, that is created and issued by a consortium of big banks. I would rather trust an EU eID with my data than that. Also for those moving to Sweden from other parts of the EU (who find it hard to get the BankID) it would make life way easier.
