“It is just over,” journalist @caseynewton told The Post. “If you wouldn’t join Gab, or Parler, or Truth Social, there’s no reason you should be on X. I think it’s time for journalists and publishers, in particular, to acknowledge the new reality and to get the heck off that website.”https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2023/11/19/antisemiticism-interent-elon-musk-israwl-war/

@taylorlorenz @caseynewton Didn’t #ElonMusk recently ban support for #Hamas and violent antizionism and Antisemitism recently?

@taylorlorenz @caseynewton it's almost like most people don't do the right thing even when it's obvious, but that which serves their interests. look at people switching to other closed platforms. applying their own selfish math to these platforms' owners, don't they know they too will squeeze them when they become dominant and have the power to do so with little cost? #enshittificaton all we can do as users is try to change those incentives.

@wjmaggos @taylorlorenz @caseynewton most important lesson I‘ve learned in my life: if you can assume malice or incompetence, always assume incompetence. And boy have I assumed incompetence often.

@taylorlorenz Public Transport companies announce their stuff on twitter. You Journalists broke it, you have to fix it. Tell us all about true decentralized services. About RSS, about ipfs, about classical email-like federation. But you can't because there is no money-layer on the Internet, haha.

@wjmaggos @taylorlorenz @caseynewton This doesn’t have merit. Those other closed platforms especially under Meta have always been larger than Twitter and it never got close. People go where there’s their community. Pushing the Fediverse is disingenuous especially due to the cultural debt

@dameoutlaw @taylorlorenz @caseynewton what do you mean by cultural debt? maybe I'm misunderstanding but going for community is still selfish if that means we're all stuck with a "public square" controlled by billionaires and advertisers. they could band together together to move their audiences here, but that would be difficult. they'd rather just hope the bad stuff stops happening or somebody fixes this situation for them. but they are the biggest players in the equation, like it or not.

@wjmaggos cultural debt meaning the bad parts that have been allowed to pervade mastodon for years. It’s not selfish for them to go for their communities? How is that selfish? This place is anti-capitalist, anti-viral, fought against full text search and quotes. Important social movements would’ve never been allowed to happen here. I think it’s selfish to not want the world to have outlets where that is possible

@dameoutlaw this place is whatever we make it. the only thing defining this place is the connection mechanism. a few big accounts could completely change the culture if they decided here was the only place to follow them. any person or company with a decent amount of money could build the federated software they want and displace Mastodon. the culture here is what it is because the percentage of geeks and lefties is comparatively high. same with comic book movie culture a few years ago etc.
