I don't trust engineers who don’t sometimes curse. If you've never encountered a situation that made you drop an f-bomb in surprise or epic frustration, you're not challenging yourself enough.

@tek At one point the sweetest, gentlest, more sincerely devout programmer I ever knew, who spent weekends volunteering at soup kitchens and donated a fifth of his take-home pay to charity, leapt to his feet in the middle of the office and shouted FUCK.He looked around, turned bright red, and immediately wrote an apology to the entire staff. When he finished, programmers were four deep around his cubicle wanting to know what he found. It was widely agreed that yes, the bug merited that.I trusted his competence much more afterwards.

@tek I'm solo engineer on my current project team. I had to have an advance talk with my, comparatively mild mannered, product and CX teammates, that swearing is part of the incantation that summons the Engineering Superpowers. While I'll try to keep it on the low end, it was, in fact, necessary.

@etoani Absolutely. Long story short, I'm of the strong, tightly held opinion that if you don't bleed on a computer you're building, it won't work. It's dumb. It makes no sense. It’s utterly illogical.But it's true.You have to bleed on a computer, and sometimes you have to curse at them. I don't know why that’s the case. It just is.

@tek @etoani no I mean at work and real life. we had to explain to the kiddo in preschool that she was allowed to swear all she wants but that her teachers might not like it so she should probably not. turns out she doesn’t swear as much because school does discourage it. 😂

@tek also hard to get frustrated with python. maybe some stakeholder can prod you with an unreasonable deadline, but even the tougher parts are like less frustrating to solve with py. people can frustrate me. python...i can take a pause and come back to it.
