Left to history at this point is the fact that POTS lines were so regulated that every telco ran away from them when they got the chance. I have a business acquaintance who noted that their local POTS trunk was accidentally cut last month, killing service to the remaining customers, and that there is ZERO plans to ever fix it. It will be like that where the service just rots away as every company in the Internet infrastructure business just loses interest in even providing the service.

And I bet it has a fixed number of upstream providers: ISPs, direct connections to Tier 1 providers, etc. It's basically a local ISP itself, whose endpoints are in space instead of the outside of your house.So while Starlink could form its own small-i internet, it's probably susceptible to the same censorship levels that KF is currently grinding through on the actual Internet. It just hasn't been targeted. If the government or whoever's influential enough reaches up to those Tier 1 ISPs, they can cut off access to the broader network and isolate its users.

I wad a mechanic for a telecom company years ago. Just dig up the fiber junction box pry it open and propane torch it. Destroys the fiber optic cable making a splice repair much much harder.

Good to know. I also didn't know they were that easy to damage. You'd think companies spending supposed millions to roll out fiber would want a more secured access system. Even if they had a locking box it would be easy to access for someone who knows how to pick locks or someone smart enough to get a master key.

It would definitely be easier than digging. Now if I just knew what to do about pole strung fiber cause that's way more common in my area. I guess if someone wanted to really hurt a telecom, like AT&T for instance, they could go after the VRAD and other boxes that they have placed every few miles. From what I understand there is tons of expensive equipment in there, like a bunch of $10k switches and stuff, that would be easy for a angry person to destroy.

The above ground stations that aren't even protected by fences and have shitty locks thay can be defeated with a screwdriver, or just a shotgun blast, are insanely easy to be tampered with and is a huge weakness. People don't mess with power substations frequently because they don't want to die, although some have taken to shooting certain parts filled with oil, but telecom stuff is just a sitting duck.

Man, if you don't want to be thay destructive because it's obvious you can make bump keys super easy or if it's a circular key they make picking tolls that figure out the actual key super quickly and unlock the stuff fast. Picking is really not terribly difficult nowadays unless you're single pin picking a high security lock.That being said if you're going for maximum damage you might as well take the lock out too. The poles aren't grounded. They run a high tension cable to a ground next to them. Also most utility poles are still wood for cost reasons, an 18" bar chainsaw can be had used for cash of Craigslist for under $100. You should probably own one anyways. Once you have a hybrid, you have a way to convert between 4-wire and 2-wire telephone cabling. A couple more transformers (more metal and wire), some wire and connectors and you can plug it into a sound card. With the CPU power available nowdays on consumer grade comouters, you can implement the rest of the modem in software.And this is what I'm interested in figuring out: communications systems that are difficult to block and use things we already have lying around along with easily fabricated parts.

Chainsaws are VERY hand to have around for various reasons like you mentioned.You can find good deals on stuff like that on pawnshops or Greg's list like you said.I also like to tell people in hot climates to buy a smaller gas generator and a window A/C unit in case power goes out during the summer. You can keep at least one room at a comfortable temperature for a little while.

The standard can broadcast underneath the noise floor. distances of 240km can be achieved via line of sight. And there are projects like meshtastic to create mesh networks. There are also civilian micro satellites that you can repeat your signals off of. Best thing is that the spectrum it uses is unregulated. Skirting around the "no encrypted civilian radio traffic" regulation.Been implementing one between me and a freind here in town. Relaying IP traffic so I can SSH into our shared server without connecting via the Internet. And we're 2mi away from each other. Though I am at a higher elevation than him.v the projects already garnered some attention as being "subversive and dangerous" from Rutgers University.Works very well. Will be implementing text chat and voice with time. Maybe even try playing quake over it as a stress test.

I don want to leave those people out of important areas of the economy (unless they opt to do so). Improving and expanding your infra (both roads, telco, water treatment, electricity distribution, etc) allows for the standard of living in places that were shit holes (in bucketing a bunch of undesirable things in that term).
