I generally have found the trend towards "let's illustrate this blog post / new story with a Midjourney image" to be a little dreary ...So many of the images tend towards "sci-fi hyperrealism" that it gets boring after a while (And man, I'm someone who grew up on Omni magazine covers, so normally I'd *love* this stuff, lol)But, I will say, the Midjourney illustrations for this Boing Boing post are total <chef's kiss>https://boingboing.net/2023/11/15/horse-breaks-loose-on-boeing-747-forces-flight-to-turn-around.html

@clive Ah, Omni. Of all the magazines I could have subscribed to I chose one of the more eclectic ones. Maybe succumbed to their marketing, due in no small part to some of their covers!

@clive Omni. Wow. I used to hunt for those in used book stores in Finland. You might find some stacked amid Penthouses and Playboys. Now I have my fun read for the night.

@clive I had never heard about Omni before (not born on USA, and too young), but I just scrolled through the article (working hours 😬 ), and the covers captivated me!I'm saving it to peruse it later. Thanks for sharing!

@clive FWIW that style is a choice the editors are making Midjourney can make a pretty wide variety of styles. I had it try to replicate that magazine cover in a bunch of styles, these are just a few…

@sjuvonen Stacked amongst the Penthouse magazines because ...... it was published by the same guy who published Penthouse -- and used the same fonts and general layout as Penthouse!

@sjuvonen It is really fun reading those old issues. They published some truly amazing stuff! It's the first place I read short stories by the big cyberpunk authors like William Gibson

@clive I like weird, but the generative stuff just feels ‘off' to me, and not in a good way.I mean, the perspective, sizing, and OMG what's up with the horse's teeth?! They all look wrong even to me, and I'm a 2d illustrator, so I don't do this kind of stuff. This should only be used as a sketch and given to a real artist to complete. Is it interesting, yes... but I would rather look at weird covers made by humans than generative stuff.Just my opinion, I’m probably wrong YMMV etc lol ✌️

@andycarolan Nah, I get you -- part of what is so uncanny-valley about this style of generative stuff is what you've put your finger on here: The perspective, sizing, and detailsI found it pretty funny! But generally this stuff bums me out

@clive It is a funny image, totally. As you said though, it is easy to get burned out on these things. I know of a few people who regularly post on LinkedIn, and the images they now use are all generated by MidJourney. LinkedIn already felt false anyway, so at least they go along with that narrative I guess haha.
