I try not to post too much meta discourse about social media, but …… I’ve been giving Threads more of a try in the last few weeks. A lot of folks I know IRL and professionally are on there and like it But damn, it’s just kind of … dull and predictable, compared to Mastodon Mastodon has way more weirdos and obsessives and deep idiosyncratics Just so much more deeply interesting over here

@clive I feel like there's two kinds of social media: the social media that people go to because It's What You Do, and the social media that people go to because it genuinely brings them joy. Mastodon and Cohost are definitely the latter, and the only ones I care about anymore.

@clive Opposite of Threads, not as lively due to it being invite only. It was quiet and not very active. Development seemed slower too of the service. Threads appeared more as a place for people leaving Twitter.

@jnv @clive It’s more active now but I see a lot of flame wars there these days. Reminds me of the early days of Twitter. I keep coming back to Mastodon because it calms me. Bluesky is the opposite of that.

@clive I agree. I've been peeking at Threads as well. Since the main feed algorithm “knows me” pretty well as an Instagram user, it shows me nice photography and design stuff. But this is my social media home base. There's tons of wonderful nerds here.

@clive 😅👍🏻Threads is not available in the EU, so some perspectives are missing. Mastodon is everywhere and theoretically accessible to everyone. I like that. I also have a lot more fun and insights here than on any other social platform.

@clive I am ignoring the virtual haranguing I get from Meta to sign up for Threads. I use Insta to share art with a virtual community, not another venue for chatting. Esp. since there's potentially even more PII being exposed using Threads than just Insta
