I'm torrenting Windows 2000 Service Pack 3. Never thought I'd be doing that. I need it for a client who wants to keep spare computers to run an old critical business application. https://archive.org/details/win-2000-sp-3-dell-rec-mediaI plan on installing on an older Dell Optiplex. Anyone know if Windows 2000 plays okay with SSDs? #Windows #Windows2000 #retro

@matthew I'm not even sure Windows 2000 plays okay with spinning drives.

@matthew the question is not the SSD rather than SATA driver.

Good point. I think the service pack 3 will have the SATA drives, but I'll find out soon. I am preparing to do the installation this evening.

I am hoping that a Dell Optiplex 760 with Core 2 Duo will be hardware compatible enough with Windows 2000. Testing that out now. I do have older hardware, too, but I want to get the client something that is fairly easy to source parts for. The Optiplex line is good for that.

I didn't know that. I should be able to find the download to apply service pack 4. Thanks for mentioning it. It installed. Now I will be hunting for drivers. The Windows 2000 installer did see my SATA SSD and installed on it without issue. #Windows2000 #retro

Hey Matthew can I blow your mind for a min? This tool should run on any version of Windows and it will install all the drivers for you, using the latest OEM drivers. https://sdi-tool.org/

I've had cases where a specific chip is branded as one thing but there's a newer driver for a differently branded product with the same chip and so you just get the newer driver automatically :D an extra label of awesome

As I understand it, XP was the continuation of the foundation that was built with Windows 2000. Some Windows XP drivers work fine in Windows 2000, for example. Kind of like most Windows 10 drivers will work fine in Windows 11. The client specifically requested Windows 2000, but I am not sure it would make a difference for their use case whether they have XP or 2000.

The website says it'll work on Windows 2000. I downloaded the small version (but don't have ethernet working yet on this particular Windows 2000 machine) and am torrenting the larger 35GB one with all the drivers. I think I had heard about it before, but hadn't tried it out because I had accumulated my own driver library over the years that let me quickly install most Windows drivers. If sdi-tool can get them all, including for Windows 2000 and XP, that'll be a huge win.

Isn't it amazing that you can download literally all windows drivers and it will fit on a cheap USB stick?

@matthew interesting! Must be using the similar Windows NT base. It was changed drastically in windows 10 from 7. Gotta love the 32-bit hardware and OS. I remember when 64-bit started to be more mainstream, it was buggy. Now it’s the only supported processor for hardware, etc.

I got a .dll error trying to run the sdi-tool on Windows 2000. It was looking for a kernel32.dll which never existed on Windows 2000 (according to the research I did), but is in newer versions of Windows.Giving up on Windows 2000 for the Dell Optiplex 760 as I think Windows XP will also work fine for my client. Burning a Dell OEM Windows XP SP3 CD now.

The sdi-tool should work fine on Windows XP. Also Dell has all the XP drivers available for the Optiplex 760, too.

It might still be easier and better to run SDI, even if Dell did provide a set of drivers. There may have been newer drivers for other similar devices for the same chipset, it can detect stuff like that. Hyper optimal driver selections.
