Moms and pediatricians: I'm 9 months pregnant and preparing to bring our first human resource into this world. The vitamin K shot our birth center and pediatrician have access to both contain aluminum and she is unable to get the oral vitamin k shipped to the US... Anyone have experience with this or know how to obtain an infant oral version of vitamin k?

@Rennegade Vitamin K is group of similar, interchangeable vitamins K1,K2,K3. K2 is typically available off the shelves in most drugstores and supermarkets. Ask pediatrician for dose, I use it as adult as it assists functions of VitD and can regularly find it in CVS, HEB,... It is the same vitamin as in the shot just no other stuff...

@Rennegade My understanding of the oral treatment is that it is not only given at birth, but also over time (weekly, monthly)This biggest risk of VKDB is between day 2 and week 7 (about 1 - 1.5%).Up to you to balance the aluminum risk vs. VKDB risk. Imho, the VKDB risk is pretty high.Keep in mind, that aluminum is also ingested via breast milk and formula.

@Rennegade good call on opting out of the Vit K shot—it has a black box warning. I know someone that used the oral Vit. K with her baby but her midwife provided it to her (US)

@Rennegade I had the Biotics brand drops from Amazon on hand to use if everything went smoothly, but we ended up getting the shot because she had a traumatic birth with a cord wrap and bruising from the birth canal adventure.

@Rennegade Hopping in to concur with everyone on the thread. You might have time to order oral Vit K from a site like InHisHands.com but only 1 of our 4 human resources took the oral drops at birth due to bruising on his head from a difficult birth (sunny side up, HR#3) so I pray and trust you will have a wonderful birth experience and it won't be necessary! 💜

@Laurien thank you for sharing your experience and where you got the oral vitamin k you used. I will look into that site.

@Wy7usa yes usually the oral vitamin k is given at birth, first feeding, again at 2 weeks of life and then once more at 4 weeks.I've heard that the research is not quite clear as to whether or not vitamin k is transferred through breast milk...

@Laurien @Rennegade that website is where our midwife recommended as well if we opted to have it. We are still doing our research but currently are leaning towards opting out. Our midwife put it in a really interesting way for us “would god really make that big of a mistake and have every child missing these important things? Or is the medical industry just trying to protect itself and blanket give these to every kid when truly only a small percentage truly needs it?” Same with Rhogam…

@Tacos @Rennegade It sounds like you have a wonderful midwife who would really get along with ours! The only thing ALL babies need at birth is skin-to-skin contact with Mama. 💜

@Tacos oh my the conversations I had about Rhogram what an eye roller. I had to have @Pantangelini get a blood test to prove we were both negative blood type and even after they said they still suggested I take it... I switched to a birth center after that.
