The craziest thing to me about the new Steam Deck OLED is Valve made the device better with a bigger battery, bigger storage, new OLED HDR screen, bigger screen, higher refresh rate and didn't keep the price the same, they actually lowered it.

@BrodieOnLinux If I could afford, I'd definitely be interested in buying one. My only gripe is that the hardware specs are kind of low, meaning it could go out of date faster than a traditional console.Still though it makes me pretty excited that such a thing exists. As for the price, I'm fairly certain that it is either a loss leader, or doesn't make much (if any) profit.

@BrodieOnLinux Its amazing. If I had to guess they probably found out they were vastly miscalculating how much money they would get from people buying games in their old models prices, which is probably why they were so comfortable putting the deck on sale every major sale.

@Nouvanity The base 64GB even existing feels like a product of hardware shortages rather than something they had actually wanted to make. 64GB on a gaming device is excessively low in 2023

@BrodieOnLinux @Nouvanity you dont seem to understand that 64GB is something you can turn into a 512 GB model in under 10 minutes for much less than what the 512GB model is worth

@boilingsteam @Nouvanity You don't seem to understand the difference is more than just the bigger storage, now it's a new screen bigger screen, the bigger storage, a bigger battery, a smaller process node CPU, a new wifi standard and a better carrying case.

@BrodieOnLinux @boilingsteam @Nouvanity well, the 256GB *is* just bigger storage, I think. Not that it's a bad thing, you're getting a straight storage upgrade for the same price.

@dlove67 @boilingsteam @Nouvanity The 256GB model is the same as the original it's just now priced like the 64GB model, the 512GB and 1TB model have the improvements

@BrodieOnLinux @Nouvanity you are just oblivious to the fact that they stopped making a low tier device for the OLED version, and it's probable that the LCD version will disappear as they will stop making it

@BrodieOnLinux @Nouvanity the problem is that the low tier pricing answered a market need which is not answered anymore when you stop making it

@boilingsteam @Nouvanity The price of the 256GB is the price that the 64GB used to be, people who could only afford the bottom tier model now just get a better device for the exact same price

@boilingsteam @Nouvanity If you're arguing that the 64GB model should still exist but should be made even cheaper that's a whole nother issue. The simple fact is if you were only going to spend $399 originally you got a 64GB model now instead you get a 256GB model this is objectively better and you can't argue around that

@BrodieOnLinux @Nouvanity the 256GB version as it is right now is the older hardware, and it's probably not made anymore and will only last only until it gets sold out. When it does, there will no more low tier effectively available for the Steam Deck.

@boilingsteam @BrodieOnLinux @Nouvanity presumably, if that were the case then Valve would say that, considering they say exactly that for the 64Gb and 512GB LCD versions you can still buy.

@dlove67 @BrodieOnLinux @Nouvanity They probably don't say it because they believe that have enough stocks to last for a while, but no manufacturer keeps making old and new versions at the same time - this means the LCD units are being phased out.

@boilingsteam @dlove67 @Nouvanity The while supplies last specifically only applies to the 64GB and 512GB LCD models, there is no plans to discontinue the LCD 256GB

@enthusiast101 @BrodieOnLinux it only needs to run a 800p screen. So it doesn't need as much raw specs as a console

@TheStroyer @BrodieOnLinux That's true for now, but at some point, it'll get more and more outdated in the future. I guess that's true for everything, but as it is, the steam deck looks like it doesn't have much wiggle room in that regard.

@BrodieOnLinux @dlove67 @Nouvanity Again - think about it a second. Do you think they will keep producing a device that has known RMA related issued if they have a hardware that is revised and more robust? No manufacturer does that. Also, many of the components are limited by stocks, be it screen, the older APU, and more. There is no such thing as unlimited availability.

@boilingsteam @BrodieOnLinux @Nouvanity let's say you're correct (I don't think you are, I mean I can still buy an LCD switch afaik)Why do you think this means they're doing away with the $399 price and they're not going to release an OLED version once stocks are depleted? Or even just do a hardware refresh to combine supply chains and keep LCD for the low end model?
