@stux Het grootste probleem met al die 'slimme' meuk vind ik toch wel dat je lampen het niet doen als Google een storing heeft. Net als auto's waarbij alles elektrisch is. Dan kan je niet eens meer de ramen open doen als de accu leeg is.

@Jain @stux I had a rude awakening the other day when I discovered that most new printers won't work unless you connect them to wifi. I will be keeping my old USB-only printer going for as long as I can. Epson (of course) has stopped selling the ink cartridges for it to force the consumer to update but I found a small business that makes compatible cartridges and have all appendages crossed that they never go out of business. I also got rid of my Fitbit when Google bought them out.

@stux The smart home tech still has a long way to go in functionality and security, so if you want to spend twelve to fifteen grand on your home update a furnace, kitchen, or bathroom instead of fighting with light switches and lamps and outlets that will let you down later. My rule is, "if it has a non-zero chance of making my wife angry by not functioning correctly then it's not ready yet."

@stux it's funny I realized I'm kinda both that person that actually has always had everything analog at home and their own servers for avoiding third party dependencies.... as well as now dogfooding the latest Google stuff as employee, with full telemetry and debugging set up on my corp phone as such, so I guess that puts me on both ends of that spectrum nowadays? 🤔

@stuxI'm not saying smart locks are good, but mechanical locks aren't much better, every lock is pickable, they'll just slow someone down if they really want to get inThough that being said, smart locks have mechanical backup, so they're the worst of both worlds

100% yes.I was persuaded by my electrician to install remote-controlled wifi light switches. After a few years, I had to replace relays for several hundred euros. Now the light in the pantry no longer comes on, but when I switch on the light in the bathroom, my patio is also fully illuminated.

@stux Conflating simplicity with convenience is the worst. Just because one thinks they're making life easier for them, they're really subscribing to a whole new set of problems that are harder to fix (or even completely out of their control) when something (expectedly) goes wrong.

@stux Haha, exactly as we keep it here. Some small specialty devices that I set up with OpenWRT and hand-compiled applications. Had to buy another printer recently because my 1994 Laserjet 4 broke, but I am willing to repair it. I have to admit that the Kyocera I bought used is a fine printer, too. But regarding print quality, the Laserjet beats it.

@stuxYou can of course do it yourself as someone who works in IT (I wrote my own home automation for everything based on pis and simple components). It's not that simple. I know how to pick most standard locks (I had to know). Mechanical things aren't more secure. If you feel safe because the dangers are out of your area of expertise, you're in trouble. And you can't expect users to be experts in everything (even though that's been the pretence of the tech industry for the last 40 years).
