Spending a weekend evening diving into the history of the Django pony mascot and rewatching Cal Henderson's fantastic talk that, among other things, cites the need for one. https://youtu.be/i6Fr65PFqfk?si=vsQabN118GXJej3h&t=3304It's quite an exceptional talk that still holds up. I'd say especially the general points about web frameworks 19 minutes or so in.

Why research this? I'm redesigning my Django for Beginners cover for the 5.0 edition, and an obvious choice is a pony/unicorn/horse theme. But a lot (most) people I show mockups to are like, um, what's up with the pony? So I need some sort of brief explanation 😄 .I wasn't around Django for any of this so it's a bit of an archeological expedition for me.

I'm happy for a @django person to correct me on all this (👋 @simon) but I "think" Cal's talk kick-started a discussion that led to the Django pony website, images, and then Django core devs joking about adding "ponies" to Django as a metaphor for a magical, elusive feature that everyone wanted. The pony also is a pretty lighthearted emblem of the culture and its ability to be friendly/fun while still doing "serious web stuff."

@wsvincent @django That fits my recollection - I think Cal's talk was the origin of the Django Pony

@django @simon There is also the Calvin & Hobbes angle which I love, but not sure if that's epistemologically correct
