Love the fact that my new keyboard makes me aware of my typing speed. Apparently on long tests where I have the time to get going my typing speed is 147 WPM. This assumes im not putting in any effort to max out my typing speed, however even if i do i doubt id get it too much higher.#typing

@freemo Does that number allow for mistakes? That's pretty fast, even competent secretaries back in the day were considered excellent at 80 wpm. So you're exceptional!

@marathon Yes, Thats the number I get when I intentionally try to avoid mistakes. I dont count spelling errors since they are intentional sinc ei cant spell and not a mistype. but if i mistype then i backspace it and it will adjust the WPM with a penalty.

@freemo Yeah but you have to deduct your errors to have a realistic number. On the best of days I can only acheive 80 WPM and I've been typing since 1973. That's with errors deducted btw.

@marathon The errors are deducted. I am counting mistyping as errors, not misspelling because im trying to determine my typing speed accounting for accuracy, not my mastery of spelling. So misspellings that are intentional dont make sense to count.Obviously if i was trying to be a secretary this would be a bad measure as a secretary needs to know to spell... but since im measuring my ability more from a programmers perspective where spelling is less of an issue I'm ok with this.

@marathon To put it another way... if I choose to use words I know how to spell, and account for errrors, Id still be at 147. The WPM here accounts for errors and deducts for it (when i hit backspace)

@marathon when I was younger I would have been able to beat the tying world record at the time. I just never bothered to do it.

@perfect_brains No, the firmware of the keyboard caclulates the WPM ont he fly, penalizes for errors (use of backspace and delete) and displays the WPM as a chart on the OLED of my keyboard including my maximum WPM over a specified period's average.

@freemo I typed my PhD thesis to save money. It was in a mainframe with no formatting until it was printed. My speed was 52 wpm and it took forever.

@SteelFolk I suspect most people would be slower transcribing than they would be tying off the cuff.... That said I have always been an exceptional fast typist.

@🎓 Dr. Freemo :jpf: 🇳🇱 I never understood the need of typing fast. Once had an employer who asked me if that would be possible since he can type faster then I do. Asked him "But can you write code without errors? Or would you be willing to pay the extra debugging time needed once it was finished?"

@hans I've certainly never bothered to care what speed my employees can type. But there is certainly an advantage to typing fast, you get work done faster even if typing isnt the bottleneck as you cant really do other tasks while your tying anyway.

@🎓 Dr. Freemo :jpf: 🇳🇱 In my experience that sort of work can better be passed on to someone good at it. I know, I am mostly using it for tech stuff so it is not as important at that point.
