Huge if true. Amazon working on a "web-first" operating system codenamed Vega to eventually replace Android on all of its devices, starting with FireTV. https://www.lowpass.cc/p/amazon-vega-os-fire-tv-androidFrom accounts it sounds more like JS-first (React Native) than Web-first, but I'd love to know more.

@benfrancis I always thought that it's the one big tech company without a proprietary system to favor so web-based seemed like a no-brainer.

@tanepiper @benfrancis It could be much better. A lot has changed since webOS' foundations were laid. It's Amazon, however, so I'm sure they'll find a way to enshittify it sooner than later. Hopefully the web as a whole will benefit at least in the meantime.

@ondra @benfrancis Oh indeed, but also WebOS was VanillaJS and had some nice ideas - but this I fear is more vendor lock-in. If Amazon put ads in their subscription services I have no doubt they'll do it in an OS

@tanepiper @ondra @benfrancis It still sucked though at least on the devices I’ve used it on you could always tell.

@comatory Ironically, my main gripe with webOS on our LG TV is that it shipped with a browser based on Chromium version 68 and never got updated so the OS is mostly unusable for the actual web. @tanepiper @benfrancis
