Why does nobody who works for Google understand that forcing indie app developers to publish their home address is a really fucking stupid idea? This will literally get people killed. Are they doing this on purpose?

@evilham that's the worst part. This solves absolutely nothing. What benefit does it have to know the postal address of Facebook / Meta? It's not like I can go there and politely ask them not to steal my personal data.

@daniel Maybe because U.S. developers can easily get an anonymous Delaware LLC for such purposes, and they DGAF about EU devs?

@daniel @doug there are plenty of us who work for Google and shake our heads (and protest, and more) over stupid decisions like this. But very often we're ignored. Google is IMO too big for its own good.

@daniel they've been evil for years. They used not to be evil. Then the MBAs took over. C level executive scum.

@daniel Is it a new rule? or has it always been like that? (honestly curious, I never published anything there)

@castarco There has always been a free text form field called 'Developer Address' where you could enter basically anything (outdated, fake or incomplete address or a PO box). The new rule is that they are going to validate this against your bank account and you are not going to get a bank account for a PO box.

@daniel@gultsch.social can't they just use a "personal account" so only the country is published? What are the benefits of an organization account anyhow? I think especially the real name policy is stupid.

@hermlon where are you finding the information that personal accounts only require the Country to be made public?

@daniel@gultsch.social I reserved a date for my verification yesterday, so I read through the resources provided in the developer console. The information they actually need is only shown at the very end: it saysLegal address (country shown on Google Play)https://support.google.com/googleplay/android-developer/answer/14177239

@hermlon that's good news. Thank you. Google is really bad at communicating. This website doesn't mention that the published information is restricted to the country https://support.google.com/googleplay/android-developer/answer/10841920?hl=en

@daniel @hermlon Unfortunately, in my case, I still won't be able to verify my account; the legal name is required and will be shown publicly, and I publish apps under a pseudonym I use on other places, so... yeah.

@daniel @hermlon Unfortunately, in my case, I still won't be able to verify my account; the legal name is required and will be shown publicly, and I publish apps under a pseudonym I use on other places, so... yeah. It's effectively a real name policy for app devs with all the downsides that come with it.
