@clive Back on Twitter I used to follow two kinds of accounts that posted images like this. One where the images were also AI-generated, and one that posted before/after pedestrian-friendly urban redevelopments. And that made the AI-generated imagery feel more like a tangible goal, not just a depressing reminder of the current state of things.

@clive It's an #AI thing, so it consumes absurd amounts of energy / resources, not to mention it doesn't give two twigs for copyright. How #solarpunk do think this really is?

@clive This is great and the reason I dont get anything done. Make streets bike friendly are a great idea.

@clive We do need to be less reliant on cars & increase mass transportation, etc. My problem is I went from biking everywhere, skateboarding, swiming in every ocean or body of water I got near, & technical rock climbing to someone who has to choose… Do I have the bandwidth today to walk to get the mail or should I comb my hair. So few of the treatise I read about getting rid of individual cars, actually take people like me (who live rurally) into account in any realistic way.

@Pineywoozle 100%I think the goal isn’t to get rid of cars but to create a world where they’re used where they’re most needed, instead of as the default I cycled across the country this year and saw lots and lots of places where cars and trucks will be needed basically forever And even in denser cities like where I live, you need cars and trucks for anyone with mobility issues

@fedithom yep, good pointGenerative AI is also thirsty, as I blogged about here a while back: https://clivethompson.medium.com/ai-is-thirsty-37f99f24a26e?sk=f5b2ea10c649a34236577139fecfd86a(free friend link there)

@clive @Pineywoozle Some discuss this fanatically, cars are evil. Better public transpiration, better city planning are needed. As are vehicles. And this gets lost in a lot of discussions. "EV cars?!!!! No cars!!!!!" They've either grown up in cities or small countries.

@clive @Pineywoozle Indeed. I live on a county road off of US Highway 69 in rural Texas. The closest grocery store is ten miles away. There are no EV charging stations. We aren't getting rid of our pickup trucks anytime soon. But we are a small minority. Most people, those who live in cities and suburbs, can easily use EVs and public transportation, or even bike and walk.

@CStamp @Pineywoozle Yeah preciselyAmerica is big and, in terms of living arrangements and community structure, diverse as heckThere will be no one size fits all answer to reducing the carbon footprint of our mobility

@bruce @Pineywoozle Yep yepA huge amount of emissions can be reduced if we focus on what can be done in more-densely-populated areas
