In one generation, we will have extracted, consumed and wasted more materials than in all of previous history, than in all the time humans have been on the planet. And the rich 10% will have done 50% of this consuming and wasting. The poorest 50% will have done 10% of this.We can transition all we want. Our lifestyles are not sustainable. We must embrace Degrowth

@gerrymcgovern And a return to a fully circular economy. We can't keep the extract -> convert -> sell -> use -> garbage pipeline going forever. No matter how small scale we make it.

@gerrymcgovern Double boosting this important information. People need to change away from the cultural value of materialism, overconsumption, and the beief that being filthy rich is in any way a good thing.Thank you for these important numbers which puts things into a valuable perspective.:mastodon:

@gerrymcgovern I remember hearing once that at that time (20 years ago?) we could avert much of the harms of climate change by reducing our energy usage to 1970s levels, and thinking, hey, I grew up then, and it was hardly primitive! This is doable, people! But of course, we didn’t, and not only doesn’t that calculation take into account the 20 years of continued CO2 emissions, it doesn’t account for our increased inequalities. The poor deserve more; the rich MUST take less. 😕

@megmuttonhead @gerrymcgovern the rich will never choose to take less. If there is no revolution, there will be no change sufficient to save us, unfortunately. My guess(which is pure conjecture, mind you) is that even then, we are in all likelihood totally fucked - but at least there's some sliver of a chance, that way

@gerrymcgovern I've always wondered how useful returning to commodity/metal currency standards could be to help with this. For one thing, historically they bankrupted states waging war, and you can't keep inflating for "infinite growth"

@z3r0fox @gerrymcgovern the problem with returning to a gold standard, or similar, is that it is not robust enough to withstand the trade of the current global economy; and is deflationary in nature - which will serve only to further consolidate power into the hands of the few

@fcktheworld587 @megmuttonhead @gerrymcgovern AgreeThere is no point in "we" embracing degrowth > that's just allowing billionaires to take EVERYTHING instead of most of itWish people would stop already with the "we" stuff, it's the easy lie that allows us to pretend there's no enemy but "us"No one with any sense will give up their small bit of life while oligarchs are allowed to keep killing Earth w/ personal space programs, private jets, castles, & fleets of fancy cars

@fcktheworld587 @gerrymcgovern Sounds like it would kick off degrowth, but maybe not in a good way

@fcktheworld587 @gerrymcgovern On a global scale, most of us ARE rich. I am certainly NOT making the argument that degrowth is irrelevant for the rest of us. For those who travel by plane, every flight emits about a year’s worth of CO2. Ordinary Americans consume many times the resources of Europeans, let alone Africans. We DO need to make society-wide changes. Eating the billionaires won’t be enough if we’re unwilling to end our dependence on cars, etc.
