The most interesting thing about xAI's 'grok' is how it confirms what me and others have been saying for a while: "AI" construction is less about having new ideas or new tech, it's about just having access to data and resources. If you have money you can spin up a competitive LLM in months.

It's not about 'clever new algorithms' or other forms of actual engineering or research. Just throw data against NVIDIA hardware until the results look fine.

@tante that should also be a big red flag for investors. there is no usp for any of those. you won’t get to be a monopoly.

@tante Given your specific example, I'd add that it is about mass-producing specifically biased and skewed content that suits one's own agenda. This maybe hasn't been as obvious with the GPT models, but is blatant with grok.Elmo wants to flood the zone with shit - preferably, his shit.

@tante "competitive" might be a strong word in this particular model's case, unless the market segment being competed for is annoying guysBut maybe we'll see it used as an astro-turfing machine to prop up a failing business for a little bit, that would be pretty novel

@tante That’s why Altman went looking for a regulatory moat, right?

@tante I wonder if that whole Musk-signed letter to "pause" AI development for 6mo, published ~6mo ago, was just a ploy to let him play catch up.(of course it was, I am being sarcastic)

@rysiek it would make sense for normal people. Given of how he operates I am not sure Musk can plan anything this long term. He makes goldfish look like memory gods.
