The auto industry has even more contempt for your privacy than Big Tech, which is saying something. Now an appeals court has ruled that the car makers can intercept and sell your private information, and you can't do a damn thing about it.https://therecord.media/class-action-lawsuit-cars-text-messages-privacyWell, one thing: Don't hook up your phone to these sleazy companies' "entertainment" systems.

@dangillmor Many of these new cars come with SIM cards and comms already installed. So they can still collect data and push updates without you connecting your handset.

@dangillmor That's why I won't be buying any of these EVs. I'm sticking with my old gas guzzlers. No internet, no GPS, no BS.

@dangillmor @dangoodin Here is a procedure to remove the cellular modem from your Hyundai Kona. My thought is if this exists for Hyundai, it probably exists for most other cars.https://techno-fandom.org/~hobbit/cars/ev/offnet.html

@dangillmor @dangoodin There's an app called Privacy4Cars that shows you how to delete your data from any car...but get this, the app collects and shares with 3rd parties your location, personal info, and photos and videos! 🙄 🥴

@dangillmor @dangoodin Scope? Is this only for GM/Honda/Toyota/VW infotainment systems or is Apple CarPlay also at risk? (I don’t think it is, but just checking…)

@dangillmor @dangoodin That's outrageous! Watch out for car insurance companies too, a discount if you let them monitor your driving habits. No thanks.

Someone is going to have an outstanding business someday in selling things that don't spy on their owners, and in neutering or disabling the spyware in the things that do. There is massive market potential, once people understand what's at stake if they allow relentless surveillance to continue.
