Have you ever heard of #lulo? It's one of those amazing fruits that grows semi-wild in the tropics. In some countries it's widely consumed and commercially produced, but here in #Venezuela it's hard to find outside of a home garden. Lulo makes an amazing jam, but we prefer to blend it into fresh juice. Whats it taste like? 🤔 In my opinion, somewhere between a kiwi and tropical punch. If you've tried this fruit, how would you describe its flavor? #Agroecologia #Agroecology #Permaculture

@TraRay Lo cultivamos en nuestra finca de #PuertoRico, sabe a tomate afrutado. Coseche con guantes, la fruta tiene pelos que pican y que deben eliminarse antes de consumir. We grow it on our farm in #PuertoRico it tastes like a fruity tomato. Harvest with gloves, the fruit has itchy itchy hairs that must be removed before consuming.

@TraRay yes! I think kiwi comes close except, if I remember it right, the lulo never gets very sweet on its own. The juice is maybe like a kiwi lemonade? 😁

@marews they can get kind of sweet, but they're not something you'd just want to eat on its own. I never add sugar to the juice unless I'm making a 100% lulo juice but usually opt to sweeten it with a sweeter fruit, like pineapple.

@TraRay La Fe (Colombian brand) sells the fruit pulp and you can find it in Latin Grocery stores in the US and you can also find the seeds to grow. ❤️ To me, it’s like Capri Sun with a touch of tomato.

@jblue that's awesome! Have you grown it? I know at one point someone tried to commercially grow it in FL but it never really took.

@TraRay I’ve eaten this fruit in Ecuador. It’s called something else there-naranji or naranjilla or something. I don’t know how to describe the taste. Solanum quitoense is the botanical name and it seems to be related to the tomato.

@TraRay I don’t grow it bc buying the frozen pulp is easy and inexpensive ($2.50 per packet). I grew a close relative, Solanum glaucescens but wasn’t impressed with the flavor. It also grew like a beast and had fearsome thorns. It was perpetually stabbing me so I let winter weather compost it bc there was no way I was bringing that into the garage to overwinter. It grew like a thicket of long woody vines. Everyday, I’d have to wind a shoot through a trellis. It was a monster.

@eugeneparnell it is in the same family as tomatoes. And I've never been to ecuador but I can imagine it's popular there.

@jblue I've never heard of solanem glaucescens! I looked it ip and it looks like a cross between this and passion fruit! The sharp thorns are also similar. The lulo grows on a massive bush with enormous leaves and every centimeter of the plant is covered in absurd spines just waiting to impale you 😂.
