Why are Windows users so stupid, why do I get people in my comments telling me how great Windows 7 still is in 2023. There is literally no rational argument to be running Windows 7, feel free to make one, but hot take, I will never encourage people to run an EOL operating system

@BrodieOnLinux not only Windows 7 has one of the best desktops, its also pretty, lightweight, accesible and great for playing old games since an old PC cant play games like Call of Duty 1 on linux using wine or proton.

@BrodieOnLinux we still have lots (10-20) people running windows vista-7 because they all have this one birthday calendar that won't run on newer windows and that's the full reason they don't switch. They're all rather old folks, that might play into that as well.

@BrodieOnLinux It's the last one that use the design the people were used to. I understand that. And it's not a privacy nightmare as win11 is. But it's EOL without any kind of support :( They should switch to React OS.For me, 7 is the best windows ever made. It >was< good. Time to move on folks!

@BrodieOnLinux It's the exact same reason as usual, some don't care about how important security is for them but I can understand that regular users are like that but seriously just use anything other than some EOL OS and security is important whether anyone like that or not won't change the importance of it.

@BrodieOnLinux these are people, who actually hate Windows 10 and 11, and don't see any alternative. They won't use Linux, cuz they think it's the same as it was when Win7 premiered, so they are stuck.

@aliceif@mkultra.x27.one@BrodieOnLinux@linuxrocks.online Ive seen companies using w7/xp for some stuffs and same with ubuntu 12.04 "nowdays" in some prod server behind a firewall. The issue with window7 is that you go to 4chan/g/ and besides the racism transphobia and all that shit there are posts of how w7 is the best and how keep using it.Also the daily post of "you don't need anything more than the i5 2500k"

@BrodieOnLinux and the worst thing is - they won't admit, that they hate Windows. They'll live in denial and preach how great it is.The only people worse than that are guys who use custom Windows "distributions", like FoxOS, ReviOS, which are just Windows 10/11 with disabled security, defenderz updates and everythong stripped, to squeeze another 2 fps from 11 year old PC

@BrodieOnLinux I've already tried to mentally prepare people for new PCs or a switch to Linux, but especially elderly people told me that they will just continue using Windows 10.I guess I'll have to force-convert (hardware gift) some PCs in two years, as online banking with an EOL OS is unacceptable. ;)But I'm also involved with a school that happens to have a large amount of computers from 2016 that missed Windows 11 compatibility by one year. We'll see if the budget allows new PCs ...

@BrodieOnLinux yeah obviously, I have a machine that is great to play xp era games but since it still has 4gb of ram I have a debian based distro installed for office work and multimedia. When it starts to fall off then I will install or vista or 7 for old school gaming (without internet obviously).

@BrodieOnLinux I even stopped to use it in my VMs because the software support is shit by now but if I had to guess the only "usecase" would be if you are a die-hard Windows fan (I doubt those actually exist) and your computer can't run Windows 10. That still makes you a fucking idiot but it at least makes some sense beyond nostalgia I guess.

I get the windows hate but it’s about accessibility for a lot of situations. A lot, and I mean a lot of overseas computers still run XP. Shocking I know, but why upgrade when it still serves its purpose and function just fine? I’m not defending it but facts are people are lazy and they won’t address something until it’s broken.

@BrodieOnLinux I ran a win7 desktop into the ground and I’ll be honest, it was more sentimental than logical. I held onto it well into win10 to avoid the extra telemetry MS kept trying to add in, and I was using a bytecode security service called zeropatch to keep the most serious flaws at bay, but a part of it was the wait for proton to get decent enough to jump to linux daily (and a market gap when I could afford to build again) and the rest was the fact that I’d kept it alive for so long and I was kind of attached to it for that reason.By the time I finally decided against reviving it again maybe a year.5 or two years ago now I’d kept that installation so barely functional for years that I got malware at times that failed to actually operate and I discovered the remnants of it years later because I’d done all sorts of stupid tiny things like, for example, deleting my winSXS folder to reclaim space on an early SSD and giving winupdate an existential crisis. The system itself was built in 2012, but the operating system had started life years earlier as an italian language windows vista iso that I’d done all sorts of crazy things to alter, upgraded to english 7, manually altered to boot from efi, eventually actually paid for and replaced key, and kept moving drive to drive.I get that most admins see a single flaw and decide they need to nuke the entire drive and reimage, but I’m in that renegade corner of the computer world that’s kinda invested in keeping it operable because it’s eventually becomes like a tiny little creature that only you recognize the extremely weird behaviors of. A dysfunctional tamagotchi that still runs GTAV just fine, even if the waves of progress lap against the shore and slowly remind you that some new game uses APIs don’t work. It remained a daily driver because at some point for money reasons it had to be, but there was definitely some little part of me thinking ‘maybe something spirals so out of control here that my computer becomes the primordial soup for machine intelligence, let’s find out.’

@BrodieOnLinux My favorite Windows is 8.1. If it where not for stuff being unsupported I would run that. Any Windows version below 10 was "better" imo. Windows 10 is just depressing to use. 11 looks more inviting but I have not tried it.
