I just heard someone say "chocker block" instead of "chock-a-block." That's a new one to me.A chock is a piece or block of wood, and "chock-a-block" is a nautical term "said of two blocks of tackle run so closely that they touch," according to Etymonline. https://www.etymonline.com/word/chock-full#etymonline_v_11300Surprisingly, it doesn't look like it's from the same "chock" as "chock-full."#etymology #WordNerd

@grammargirl I can never be sure if English is the stupidest language or the most wonderful language so I think it might be both

@grammargirlIt's only slightly related, but I am reminded of "the bitter end," another nautical term which (as far as I can tell) has nothing to do with the more common use of "bitter."

@grammargirl These days sailors say "two blocked" (which I've had people misunderstand as "tube locked"). Common on Laser sailboats going upwind with the main trimmed all the way in so the block on the boom is touching the block on the traveler.

@grammargirl In Aussie slang, we abbreviate 'chock-a-block' to just 'chockers', as in 'It's chockers, mate', meaning it's full to the brim. We're good at abbreviating all sorts of words!

@grammargirl I feel like that would be the normal pronunciation colloquially in NZ. At least my part of it

@grammargirl whaaaat? I’ve always thought of chock-a-block in terms of chock full. 🤯
