@mjg59 wsl is slow as shit. a project we use at dayjob compiles more than 10 times faster on a native linux.

@mjg59 it keeps looking more and more like MS is slinking out of the OS business. Windows cloud servers? Nah, run Linux in Azure. Windows phones? Nah, Microsoft-branded Android phones. MS tools for cross-platform development? Nah, Linux containers as a Windows feature.First they adopt Mono and opensource .NET core, maybe later they’ll adopt Wine and opensource Windows core(Like, after users get tired of a paying for a billboard as an OS)

@mjg59 arguably a better POSIX dev experience than macOS now that it can run systemd and graphical apps. Pity the hardware is so meh.

@mjg59 I've seen so many people at work switch from Linux to WSL that it lands up feeling like the competition is between the two. But on reflection they are leaving Linux because of hostile IT policies (thankfully things are improving on that front) and the competition is really between WSL and Mac as the options left over.

@mjg59 as someone on MacOS right now, though, I would *love* to be working back on Linux. Heck, even my non-technical wife, who's on MacOS because we both want to be running work project, is going back to her decade old Linux laptop from her Air because the OS is is just a nicer place to be than Mac's "let's strong-arm you into subscription everything and abstract where your files are".

@mjg59 My company allows engineers to pick Windows or Mac but the Windows machines have virtualization disabled as well as many other restrictions so everyone picks Mac. I would love to try Win 11 especially with the new dev drives feature

@mjg59 This 100% checks out for me. WSL is the only reason I am able to use Windows on my work machine. I was previously using a Mac and would probably still be if WSL didn’t exist.

@mjg59 a weird take even with evidence for it.youre confused that people think microsofts policy of embracing and extending competition in order to destroy it might apply to microsofts extending and embracing of a competitor- INSTEAD of doing it to target A DIFFERENT ONE that is less directly targeted?microsoft has a habit of sticking to its tactics over and over through the years. this would be like dick van dyke suddenly sidestepping the ottoman instead of tripping over it.
