They made the black woman resign:N.Y. Times writer quits over open letter accusing Israel of ‘genocide’ https://www.washingtonpost.com/style/media/2023/11/04/nyt-jazmine-hughes-resigns/

@jeffjarvis A reporter used a racist and unsupported phrase and was asked to resign. The fact that she's black or a woman doesn't change that, and the fact that you used the "They made her..." strikes me as awfully close to "(((They))) made her"We'd normally celebrate when someone is fired for public bigotry, whereas she was not fired but asked to resign.Your pitting Jews and Black folks against one another is tokenizing to both and quite gross.

@serge @jeffjarvis I didn't see the article call out a phrase from the petition. What is the racist phrase?

@theheck @jeffjarvis While no one can reasonably argue that there aren't horrors going on in the war between Israel and Hamas, the accusation of "genocide" is both inaccurate and most Jews (including myself) find it to be a deliberate phrase that is meant to invoke both the Holocaust and the demonization and delegitimization of Israel, thus antisemitic.See this article by the ADL for more:https://www.adl.org/resources/backgrounder/allegation-israel-commits-acts-genocide

@serge Genocide is not a "legal term". Use Webster's for Muhammed's sake."the deliberate killing of a large number of people from a particular nation or ethnic group with the aim of destroying that nation or group."HMM.

@shram86 If you're saying that no one has been arrested for hate speech in the US, you'd be right. The First Ammendment in the US means that people are free to use disgusting, awful, hateful terms with no legal consequences. The New York Times, as any employer, is allowed to terminate someone's employment if they violate the terms of their agreement.

@shram86 Yes, it's an explanation of why the term "genocide" does not apply to the Israel/Palestinian conflict, but more than that, why Jews are offended by it.If you need more context for understanding it, then read up on the issue of Holocaust Inversion, which is something I see on the Fediverse extremely often, sometimes several times a day:https://jcpa.org/article/holocaust-inversion-the-portraying-of-israel-and-jews-as-nazis/The accusation that "Jews are the new Nazis" is the core problem, and using inaccurate and incendiary terms like "genocide" only further illustrate this issue. The idea of a "legal term" here is like saying there's a legal term for other slurs- that simply doesn't exist.
