@Moon Or better, loicense it under open-source like they did with MS-DOS so the fork is a legit one.(And like ReactOS is a thing)

@lanodan every year once a year for the last 20 years or so I re-try ReactOS and it never is viable.

@lanodan I was grateful for the MS-DOS code release, I learned some stuff I didn't understand from it about the background printing functionality.

@lanodan incidentally I was looking at SEL4 and it appears that all of it and the dev environment is just C, it doesn't seem to have any kind of modern safer languages.

@Moon Not sure if I am as I don't think I would want to deal with M$ software but if it meant better compat for dosbox and FreeDOS then yay.

@lanodan that's a good question, it's not free software but since it's source-available seems like you could learn from it.

@Moon Source-available? MS-DOS 1.25 and 2.0 are under MIT.

@Moon Well they could also have used the older memory-safe languages (which is effectively anything but C and C++), but I guess it's just much easier to use a language everyone is used to.And microkernel+capabilities quite mitigates the issues of C, which you're stuck with anyway for drivers (unless you have a gigantic team of people to rewrite them I guess).

@lanodan I don't mind the OS being written using formally-verified C but userland stuff using a different language would be nice.I see that Genode apparently has Rust working on it and that runs on top of SEL4 so maybe that combination works.

@Moon I'd doubt Rust works well on SEL4, but maybe they managed to get something like a compat layer (after all L4Linux is a thing, because Linux is a windows).

@moth_ball @Moon You think Microsoft, fucking Microsoft, wouldn't throw at the very least a cease&desist at you? Plus they likely have used code from other corporations (say for drivers), which are likely just as bad as M$.And due to it being proprietary, you're going to have even less people contributing than like ReactOS.

@moth_ball @Moon Yeah but no one is going to touch it to do something useful.Heck it's been in the open for years and it doesn't seems like anyone did, and I think the only readers of it are malware developers (which by definition aren't legit in the first place) because there's definitely still machines running WinXP lying around.

@lanodan @Moon @moth_ball for where it counts, XP source code was leaked a couple years ago I think?the problem really is just that it's fucking radioactive unless Microsoft opens up the license. (which they might not be legally able to do, at least if you want a "functional" source code release rather than a source dump, since XP shipped with drivers on the install disc.)

@glitch @lanodan @moth_ball you guys are putting more thought into it than I did, you can download hacked up Windows 11 installs of bittorrent, just hack up a version of XP with updated TLS libraries that can play indie games

@moth_ball @Moon I've seen kiosk/ticket-vending/cashier machines running WinXP so many times even after the EOL that I wouldn't be surprised they're still there, and those by definition are networked.
