"Every year the world subsidizes fossil energy adds 12 trillion dollars to the global economy. Take that away and you are in a fine pickle. You had better find something else to spend it on, and quick. Here are a few items from my shopping list. All of these are steps along the way to a New Carbon Economy, one that mines greenhouse gases from the sky, burns them for energy, and then buries the #carbon waste underground, essentially forever." https://peaksurfer.blogspot.com/2023/09/my-new-12-trillion-dollar-annual-budget.html#biochar #forests #MarinePermaculture #wetlands #remineralization #albedo #permaculture #CO2 #reforestation

@KeithDJohnson We've been talking a lot about how to be carbon negative in the way we process future harvests of cacao and coffee on the farm. What we've decided is that the best way is to combine the creation of carbon sequestering bio-char from bamboo (which is also an AMAZING soil amendment) with our need for intense heat for roasting. It seems counter intuitive, but this way we can be truly sustainable in the way we process two notoriously emission generating crops.

@TraRay Excellent! I've been making and using biochar for about a decade now and our sand soils are hugely benefited. Wish I could grow bamboo here (Michigan) but it's too cold. Our favorite char material is thorny black locust branches (the poles make fenceposts that can last 40 years).

@KeithDJohnson I didn't realize (or remember) you're in MI! That's my home state! My roots run deep in the tip of the mitt and UP. And yeah, that stuff is amazing. We're still a ways off from implementing the plan, but feel we've really hit on a win-win solution.

@KeithDJohnson and that's amazing you've been able to improve the sandy soils - or rather sand that passes for soil. I've often wondered what the soils must have been like before the ecological genocide of the logging era decimated the native ecosystems.

@TraRay My grandfather was an ag agent who used to train new farmers in the UP to improve their soils, after the forests were gone, so that they could grow crops to ship by rail.

@TraRay Very interested - we have pretty sandy soil - live in #Jersey (original not New): can you explain more about what is bio-char? I spend a lot of time trying to get some nutrient into our soil. It gets water logged in winter and bone dry in summer. And is nutrient poor. So all tips gratefully received.@KeithDJohnson

@JimmyB @KeithDJohnson I'm going to cop out here and simply share a link that I feel like is pretty thorough in its explanation. We are super basic in how we make and use it, basically putting the carbon char from our woodstove into the garden - something indigenous people have been doing for thousands of years. In more modern times it's become a more efficient and streamlined process. Here's the link: https://regenerationinternational.org/2018/05/16/what-is-biochar/

@TraRay I've known about biochar since 2004, dear friends have written books on the subject and the #Permaculture Institute of North America (my partner, Peter Bane, is the Director) produced videos on the subject. Here's one of three: https://youtu.be/S5GdzQ00HdY

@TraRay @JimmyB @KeithDJohnson Also one by product of the pyrolysis process is wood vinegar.Interesting interview (1:15:00 onwards) on wood vinegar use by John Norton, a regen consultant at Biotech Organics in Australia.https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/nutrition-farming-podcast/id1500903366?i=1000552195475I have used some bought biochar the last three years. I add the biochar to the compost pile, to the beds and I collected some diluted wood vinegar from inoculating the biochar. I soaked some carrot seed in wood vinegar with good results this year.

@KeithDJohnson That's a great video about a great project. I think one of the biggest mistakes we've made as a species is thinking of humans as separate from nature, and nature as something separate from humans. The idea that natural ecosystems are better off left alone with no human intervention has gotten us into some complicated trouble and ignores the important role we play. How awesome to see that thinking is evolving on this and that such projects are gaining ground and legitimacy. 👏👏

@KeithDJohnson @TraRay I don't understand. If slash and burn is bad, why is biochar good? I've also heard that there are right ways to biochar and wrong ways to biochar, what's the difference?

@bike @KeithDJohnson I think it can be argued that not all slash and burn is bad. In certain areas of Venezuela, this technique is still practiced by indigenous communities. They clear an area, burn it, plant it, then move on to another area, letting that particular space rest and recover. In the big scheme of things, this is more sustainable for the delicate soils of the rainforest. Nutrients and carbon are periodically added into the soil through burning, and by the time they come back...
