       Why not? People study culture, religion, and mythology. This would fit in.(Personally I do not believe in gods, demons or magic... but those beliefs exist and are part of human culture)

       There could actually be value in such a rigorous study, more as a translation from what was historically regarded as magical to contemporary understanding. For example, some "magic" brew to induce visions might be boiled down to specific psychedelics that could have extensions into modern therapies, or might explain why historical figures made some of their decisions.So it's probably not that...
