hm lexi wants to get a commercial router product though, to reduce the likelihood of a failure taking down our entire home infra and to have something running openwrt (which she’s familiar with, and which also has kernel/hostapd patches for a bunch of wifi-related stuff that upstream won’t merge)i was considering the same thing. turris omnia i guess?

@mia there are way better options for custom firmware on enterprise gear than openwrt typically, but getting good hardware is absolutely worth it imo

@mia commercial means "already shipped with OpenWRT" in your case?

@bjo@social.schafweide.org it means “hardware built for purpose” as opposed to messing around with SBCspreviously we were running a custom setup on an espressobin (pic is the case i designed, couldn’t find the photo of it in action), which worked okay but didn’t have enough processing power for packet filtering and traffic control/bufferbloat mitigation on our internet connection. and i never got around to moving the OS to a SATA SSD, so of course the microSD card it was on just died eventually.then as i was trying to restore a backup, it refused to boot reliably (might be CPU/RAM defect or a power regulation issue), so we decided on something that’s hopefully going to be less of a hassle in the long run

@mia Thanks for clarification. We have a Asus RT-AX53U running fine with OpenWRT on a symmetric 1Gbit/s FTTH line. No fiddling for flashing OpenWRT needed. The only issue is my girlfriend's iOS devices can't connect when enabling 802.11r and WPA2/WPA3 mixed mode (sticking on WPA2 now) - but this seems to be a general OpenWRT issue.

@bjo@social.schafweide.org it’ll likely handle that connection on default settings, yeah, but enabling sqm with cake (or even fq_codel) will easily bring its mediatek CPU to its knees especially if you try to run e.g. bittorrent clients.

@bjo@social.schafweide.org the turris omnia has a lot more power, but it still isn’t enough for more than 400 mbit/s with cake. sadly those algorithms are quite demanding, but they do improve latency (eliminating spikes) especially under load by reducing network congestion caused by bloated buffers

@bjo@social.schafweide.org it’s not strictly since our ISP is doing mostly okay in that regard, but definitely nice to have :neofox_happy:in general it’d be nice for more network equipment to have these mitigations by default. and in a better world, there would be no need for bandwidth caps if that were the case. alas, those no longer exist just for technical reasons…anyway, we did end up buying the turris thing, and it’s doing its job well enough

@bjo@social.schafweide.org having some headroom for additional software and some hardware extensibility is nice too. should last us a couple years at least
