OK, I have a somewhat baffling (to me) Mastodon question. How do I link to a thread?I want to link to a fantastic thread by @mhoye - but if I link to the first post in that thread - https://mastodon.social/@mhoye/111335603309582734 - I get a page with a single post on it and other people's replies, with no indication it's part of a larger thread from the same authorAm I missing something here?

@simon @mhoye I don't know, but meanwhile could you link to the first message in the thread as it looks really interesting 😆

@simon @mhoye for what it’s worth, on Ivory I get the thread. Not sure if that’s an Ivory feature or what.

@mhoye Linking to a post further down that thread seems to give me what I want, maybe because it's a post that didn't get many replies from other people? https://mastodon.social/@mhoye/111336060283130128

@mhoye It works fine when I view it in Elk or in Ivory (iOS Mastodon client) - but I want a reliable URL that I can link to which will show all of the content to people who aren't using a Mastodon client, just their browserI've been bad-mouthing Twitter recently as a terrible place to publish threaded content because it all gets hidden behind a registration-wall, I thought Mastodon threads were a better bet than that!

@mhoye I think it may be this issue on the Mastodon bug tracker: https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/24676"Linking the first post in a long thread appears to hide the thread"

@mhoye Yeah, I'm pretty confident this is a bug in the Mastodon default web application. Linking to the first post in a long thread hides the rest of the thread; linking to any subsequent post in that thread behaves as it should.

@simon @mhoye I often see that the answer to any Mastodon "How do I do this link/reference thing to a toot that seems trivial and works on Twitter" question is "You can't do that, and that's by design to stop [insert abusive social media behaviour trope here]".

@simon it works fine over here, but it does take A Lot Of Seconds on certain instances to load posts other than the first one. Mastodon.social has been having a day today, so it's probably not you. Link to the first post and wait for better #fediweather ?

@simon @mhoye when “tweetstorms” first became a thing, you’d have to link to the last one because the reply list endpoint would not list the author’s tweets first. We quickly forget how long it took to tune so many of the patterns we take for granted today.

@simon when logged out, API only returns max 60 descendants. That thread seems to have ~190 descendants if logged-in https://mastodon.social/@cheeaun/110223399374417436So ~130 of the replies are not shown for the logged-out viewers.

FYI, my server is still running v4.1.6Screenshot attached.

@Snowshadow @simon @mhoye What you linked to doesn't look like a thread? It seems to just be a single post?If you want to build a thread, post something and then reply to that post to add the next part of the thread, then reply to the reply etc. That way, when anyone links to any part of the thread, they will see all the other posts in the thread above and below it.

@feditips @Snowshadow @mhoye that's the bug: it's definitely a thread! You can see that it's a thread if you follow this link to the second post in that thread: https://mastodon.social/@mhoye/111336060283130128

@simon @mhoye i see what you mean: the whole thread loaded for me but am on the same server. if you are on your own server/instance, check the cache. it may not be refreshing appropriately. it's one of my pet peeve with Redis. it's too aggressive for small servers.

@simon @Snowshadow @mhoye Ahh okay! I see.Weirdly, if I go to the second post and then click on the first post it does display the thread correctly. But then if I refresh the page it goes back to the isolated post.Does seem like a bug, yes.You were linking correctly, it does normally work fine. This seems like some kind of freak rare bug? It's definitely not normal behaviour.

@simon @Snowshadow @mhoye p.s. But then... weirdly, if I paste the URL into the Mastodon search box to make it appear within my own server, the thread renders fine!I'm guessing this is some kind of rare database corruption or something? Never seen it before.
