"An AR-15 is as effective in school-shootings as they are when an 80 year old woman is defending her home"Imagine an 80 year old "defending her home" with an AR-15 :nkoFacepalm2: It causes more damage then it prevents!I'm no weapon expert nor do I wanna become one but the name "assault rifle" says enough if you ask meSuch weapons of destruction belong on a war battlefield and not in the home of an 80 year old or in the hands of kinds in schools..When will they wake up..

@stux The name doesn't really tell you anything and is not an industry term or have much meaning other than political posturing. The solution is not going to come through a handy collective noun.

@stux Y’know, tactile nukes are an even more effective way to defend your home against a horde of invading Huns. Are we allowed to use those now too?

@stux years ago we had a number of home invasions in the area an elderly family friend was interviewed by the local news. He said his 357 was ready if they tried him. The problem is he was legally def from serving in multiple wars his wife often had issue communicating with him.

@stux it was originally designed to replace the m14 in the Vietnam war, why do Americans think it's needed to protect their home.

@mloxton Ofc, they could have named it "love gun" or "bunny pew" or whatever but it's about what it's purpose isand in this case the "name" fits it's goal pretty good and should say somethingThe solution apparently is much harder for the US, for the rest of the world it's kinda simple

@stux I don't who said that, but cited statement is complete nonsense. Guns, in any form, are very bad in defending your home. Doesn't even matter how old is the owner. Guns are really well designed to kill, not to defend.

@stux The name is an issue because any laws need to specify. It may seem like you can just ban private ownership of "assault rifles" , and you can use imaginative names like "love gun" or "bunny pew", but if the name is not meaningful and specific, then the law would be meaninglessOther countries have adopted various methods - such as defining a groups with bunch of defining properties, or specific makes and models. Or they make guns licensable, and all firearms purchases must be approved/2

@stux oddly, we do not hear about people needing to defend their homes with AR-15s on a several times/day basis as we do with mass shootings. For the fascists, the lesson is clearly that schoolkids should be carrying AR-15s in class.

@stux At the core of it, too many gun owners in this country simply love their guns. That emotional connection people have with them makes it very difficult to change their minds. This fact, along with decades of lobbying by the NRA which has fueled bad faith interpretations of the second amendment, make any kind of common sense reform nearly impossible. https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2023/10/lewiston-maine-mass-shooting-guns/675790/?gift=j9r7avb6p-KY8zdjhsiSZ2mceGk9z6bQHsUvDQ09-GM

@stux [Not a parody] The JR-15: "A gun specifically designed to be wielded by babies, specifically an assault rifle style semi-automatic long gun. […] real bullets."[…]They could market it for people with low upper body strength. Can't handle a gun that weighs more than 2 lbs? […] unable to lift a carton of milk anymore? […] for you great, great grandma! […] but they're making clear […] it's still definitely for preschool."Maddow - Marketing guns to little kids (8:47)https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yRojUekUYZg

@stux It's meant for active military members, not for average citizens. It's meant to kill people en masse, because that's what they're designed for. There is ZERO reason for civilians to own ANY semi-automatic or automatic rifle. In fact, there are many reasons for civilians to NOT own these. Those reasons being the dead victims of these weapons...

@stux @Paul100 First of all, I don't fully understand what you're saying. If what you're saying is if I think nobody should have guns, that's not what I'm referring to. I'm referring solely to AR-15 and AK-47 type guns. There's no reason for non-active service people to have them because stuff like what just happened in Maine happens WAY too often. At least with a standard gun, once one of these people would need to reload, they could be stopped. Not so with an AR.

@cameronbosch @Paul100 Besides, flooding the streets with (semi) automatic weapons is never a good ideaAnd as far as i know, the US keeps screaming they are a democracy without a dictator so why is there a need for such weapons? If there are no weapons sold on every street corner it would also be much more difficult for criminals and so called maffia bosses or whateverIf it's normal ofc they are carrying but prob even heavier

@stux There is something very badly wrong with a society which expects an old lady to have a gun at hand to deal with attackers. Why the fuck is attacking old women in their home normal enough that you'd be preparing for it?
