Got an email from a respected researcher who's heard that Gannett has been quietly closing more weekly print papers in Eastern Mass. Has anyone heard anything? Any insiders have a memo? Discretion assured - dkennedy56 at gmail dot com. #LocalNews #journalism

@admin I think the answer was zero. Of course Gannett closed and merged a number of weeklies in Eastern Mass. about a year and a half ago. https://dankennedy.net/2022/03/17/gannett-goes-a-massive-spree-of-closing-and-merging-weekly-newspapers/

Oh I get it, they didn’t close the digital newsportal but ceased the print version on those. The titles continue online

@admin But they also eliminated all local news from the weeklies, even from the ones that still have a spectral print presence. They replaced it with regional news from around the chain.

I see. And that is the mystery. For example in Hopkinton, the Hopkinton Independent and HopNews.com are making enough money to keep going, the Independent having just hired a new reporter Mary Ellen. Yet a bit over 2 years ago Gannett shut down their former weekly in Hopkinton, The Hopkinton Town Crier. If 2 weeklys can survive profitably in Hopkinton, why couldn’t Gannett’s weekly have survived? Is Gannett so bad at running local newspapers?
