Often, people make "marketplace of ideas" arguments in favour of free speech: they suggest it's the only way we'll ever find out what's true.However, that implies that once one has discovered what's true, then falsehood is surplus to requirements. "Okay, we know the earth is billions of years old; young earth creationists can get in the bin".My argument in favour of free speech is much simpler.I don't trust any authority with the power to regulate speech. And my distrust doesn't just apply to governments (spot the British classical liberal). No authority gets to try that fascist boot on.

Free speech matters on so many levels. The free flow of ideas and conversations are what make us grow as human beings. If we were all trapped in a mental prison, unable to voice certain points of view, or persecuted for "wrong think" where would we end up as a society? All I see, in that scenario, is a dystopian hellscape in which a small handful of Ministry of Truth tyrants hold captive knowledge that could set us free of their rule. All I can picture, without freedom of speech, is the world mutating into a real life version of the movie Idiocracy...
