       #OnThisDay 30 years ago, the Maastricht Treaty entered into force. This Treaty established the European Union as we know it today, increasing cooperation between EU countries and creating EU citizenship. EU citizens have the right to vote and stand as a candidate in 🇪🇺 and local elections in their country of residence. As we look ahead to the 2024 European elections, today we remember how far we have come. This is the history of democracy in action. #EUHistory

       @EU_Commission There’s no #EuCitizenship. If there were, then every UK citizen living in the EU at the time of #Brexit would still hold their EU passports! It would have made many things so much easier for them.

       @EU_Commission I was born at the German-French border and the difficulties of a "Zollgrenzbezirk" and daily controls marked my early life.I'll NEVER forget how I crossed the border for the first time OPEN. No custom officers, no police. I drove 80 km/h instead of the permitted walking speed, honked like an idiot and shrieked with joy. And I was not the only one.I so hope that the nasty shift to the ultra-right in some countries doesn't ruin that. We worked hard for that liberty. #Schengen

       @EU_Commission It was a great step. To increase fairness, we need to have a single currency for all 27 members and same taxes scheme. To give equity, we need EU unified Ministers (e.g., Foreign Affairs, Economy, Defense)

       @EU_Commission How far, too far! Von der Leyen acts and speaks as if she were elected. She does not represent the people! And we need more transparency in her decisions...

       @EU_Commission I have a vague memory and maybe people can correct me.But didn't the vote or referendum that took place for the creation of the EU get rejected by the people but was still pushed through despite that?If that's the case. It's foundation was antidémocratic.
