"Mastodon is great because it gives you tools to curate your own experience without depending on any centralized authority. Also, everyone here needs to follow these 5000 rules I made for what and how they should post."

@mattblaze "with so many tools at your disposal to curate your experience, if you're having an issue... sounds like a you problem" is an all-too-common sentiment around here. And just wait 'till you see how this toot is received!

@TechConnectify I have a number of extremely talented, successful creative friends who were active on Twitter back in the day who won’t touch this place. They find it a mystifying minefield of counterintuitive, unwritten rules enforced by an eager self-appointed scold force. Just not worth it to them, and it’s hard to argue with.

@mattblaze Absolutely. Nobody can agree on what they want this place to be, so everyone within it operates very differently, and people are NOT afraid to tell each other off when they break whatever pattern they've grown to expect.I'm still sticking up for the idea, but the lack of self-awareness here is as astounding as it is exhausting.

@TechConnectify @mattblaze Hugh Laurie recently said something like "America is too big to ever know itself", and I think about that a lot. I think that this place is also too big to know itself, but everyone approaches it like a small in-group where they already understand the complete dynamic.

@spacehobo Ironically, I think Mastodon suffers from a wholly different problem: it doesn't have a self at all.If instances are organs, they're all all trying to exert control on this ethereal body we call the fediverse, and the body has one hell of an auto-immune disorder.
