When Sam Bankman-Fried is speaking, it's almost like listing to a 14 yr old talking about theirself :bloblaugh: "like" dis and "like" that. "like, like, like", think he's been to much on FacebookNah but seriously, it's crazy how people where throwing money at him while doing zer0 research :flan_laugh: :ablobcatgooglymlemjumping: whoopsiees, he just lost a few billion 🤷

It's super annoying when people use the world "like" for example in every single sentenceNot sure it's because English is my second language but it stands out really fast and gets annoying really fast :blobcatgiggle:

@stux it was a part of American teen speech starting in the 1980’s. It hasn’t fully died out. I catch myself doing it sometimes.

@stux Agreed. And it’s getting worse. More people are doing it more often.I’m finding a similar (and growing) dislike of the tendency for a podcaster I’m new to, who finishes his sentences — even plainly stated ones not asking anything — with, “right?”‘The thing is, people aren’t like that, right? They don’t behave that way.’Aaaaaaaalmost making the podcast unlistenable for me, because that bumps me from enjoyment of the discussion every time he does it, which is frequently.

@stux It’s not any worse than having someone from another country criticize your country. I know the US has many, many problems but it’s “like” when someone complains about your mother… it’s ok if you do it but it’s so NOT ok if someone else does it.

@stux But seriously, I think school children or young teenagers often use these kinds of linguistic mannerisms in spoken language, and in adults, this sounds a little bit uneducated.

@stux I just don’t see the need to criticize just because of his vernacular. It’s a different way of life with different norms. Doesn’t mean your way or my way is better than the other, just different.

@stux Harry Shearer (This Is Spinal Tap, The Simpsons, A Mighty Wind) would find interviews where the guest would begin every sentence with "So…", and play them on Le Show, one of the best programs on radio/streaming.https://harryshearer.com/le-show/

@stux It’s a common verbal tick, and once you notice it… incredibly distracting. It’s a filler word to give more time to think, but a whole generation of not-so-well-educated people have it.
