#Listening to the classic Hole album Live Through This, their second studio album, released in 1994;https://yewtu.be/watch?v=q5bWWNbvPmY#music #rock #grunge #RiotGrrl #Hole

It was trendy in the 90s to dismiss Hole as a bargain-bin Nirvana. But I reckon this album stands the test of time. The playing ranges from fierce to fragile, the songwriting is creative and heartfelt, and the production gives the music a huge presence, without burying its raw emotion.Asking For It is a biting condemnation of a victim-shaming culture that remains all too common. But the songs that really grab me are softer poignant ones like Doll Parts;"Someday, you will ache like I ache"

Speaking of albums full of raw emotions and smooth production, Under the Pink was also released in 1994, by Tori Amos;https://yewtu.be/watch?v=VCZrvwv4IxgThe single Cornflake Girl could be seen as an early example of what people are now calling neo soul.#Listening #music #piano #SingerSongwriter #NeoSoul #ToriAmos

Space Dog's synth-like, percussive bass is reminiscent of Björk's eerie Army of Me, which came out the following year.https://yewtu.be/watch?v=jPeheoBa2_Y

Re-listening to the next Hole album, Celebrity Skin (1998), was a little disappointing. Skin is mostly fuzz.pop wallpaper, with none of the spit and wail of Live Through This, nor it's variety of pace and intensity among the songs. Although the iconic title track and the closer Petals retain a trace of it.

Courtney Love's essay about how the music industry degrades and fleeces artists seems just as relevant now, with the recent malarkey at #BandCamp;"Today I want to talk about piracy and music. What is piracy? Piracy is the act of stealing an artist's work without any intention of paying for it. I'm not talking about Napster-type software.I'm talking about major label recording contracts."https://www.salon.com/2000/06/14/love_7/#MusicIndustry #piracy

"What the hell is content? Nobody buys content. Real people pay money for music because it means something to them. A great song is not just something to take up space on a Web site next to stock market quotes and baseball scores."

"A great writer named Neal Stephenson said that America does four things better than any other country in the world: rock music, movies, software and high-speed pizza delivery."#CourtneyLovehttps://www.salon.com/2000/06/14/love_7/Is the US still the best at any of these things? Maybe the pizza delivery?

@strypey That is an incredible article made all the more amazing by being 23 years old. Very few things need updating except for the outcome of the Metallica v Napster case is in the past instead of in the future. Really prescient stuff.

@futuresprog> Really prescient stuffI read this essay soon after it was published. Courtney Love is a talented artist and an insightful commentator on the biz. It always shocked me the way people wrote her off as a groupie, due to her relationships with Cobain and Corgan.

#Listening to Pretty on the Inside, the first album by Hole;https://piped.video/playlist?list=PLcMZN9Ql8_CicgVQOP7NOJ3B2WHZ0dtp2This is more like it. I often forget that Hole wasn't an all-female band. guitarist Eric Erlandson founded the band with Courtney Love and co-wrote many of the songs with her. But there's no question that Courtney is the star here, and the RiotGrrrl attitude is all over the first two albums (this and the excellent Live Through This).#music #punk #grunge #RiotGrrrl #Hole

@tangleofwires> Love the heaviness of that oneThe title track is as heavy - both sonically and lyrically - as anything Nirvana ever produced.
