When we talk about natural carbon sinks, people most often talk about planting and preserving treesAnd fair enough: Trees rock! 🌳 But so do ...fungi 🍄 grasslands 🌱 & phytoplankton 🍥 Step forward, you UNSUNG HEROES of CARBON SEQUESTRATIONMy essay on what it would take to help these organisms gobble up more carbon: https://clivethompson.medium.com/grass-and-fungi-carbon-warriors-81ee3724577bA free "friend" link in case you don't subscribe to Medium: https://clivethompson.medium.com/grass-and-fungi-carbon-warriors-81ee3724577b?sk=308a9f7dad9495707b2da39b12743303

@clive FWIW scribe.rip can be used as an alternative UI to Medium.I understand that you would not advertise it for monetization reasons.

@RyunoKi Nah, I'm happy to offer people ways around the paywall!I make money off the paywall but have a very utilitarian approach to it -- i.e. if people are in a situation where they can comfortably pay to subscribe, awesome; for those who aren't, I issue "friend" links whenever I post something online and espouse all the various paywall-jumping services

@koos Yes indeed -- the smart afforestation work does indeed focus on the whole ecosystemThe less-smart stuff -- i.e. the mass tree-planting that went on in Canada in the 80s and early 90s -- was rather more terribly planned, alas, and worsened this season's Canadian forest fires, as I understand

@clive It’s funny that people don’t find grasslands as charismatic as trees. I mean I get it, but I just assume that they never grew up on the high Prairie. They never saw the grasslands undulating like the sea, soft and golden under a milk glass sky. As a kid when pop would take us out to see different parts of the Oregon trail, I used to imagine Prairie Schooner’s actually sailing along, one by one in those deep ruts, surrounded by an ocean of grass.

@koos @clive the issue with trees is space needed to be a significant piece. I've seen estimates of 5-7 acres of mature forest per person. That's just not viable (and requires almost monoculture forests).Trees for shade to save AC usage and reduce urban heat island are fabulous and just for plain old air quality and beauty. Everyone should plant a tree or 5 in their yards tho.

@pixelpusher220 @koos Yeah correct on both countsLocal tree planting could reduce the need for AC quite dramatically

@clive Good piece, thanks. I just hope readers don't think their manicured lawns are good enough carbon sinks they don't have to do more. Not all grasses are the same.

@CdnCurmudgeon Yeah, I should edit in a sentence about personal lawns not fitting this bill ... I tried to repeat/rephrase "ancient grasslands" etc to make it clear, but it should be even clearer!
