Excellent @WIRED story busting myths about mobile-phone battery-charging: https://www.wired.com/story/how-to-improve-battery-life-tips-myths-smartphones/Bonus points for delving into the actual chemistry behind what’s happening inside the battery — and using that to explain its performance in behavior …… which leads to this really interesting conclusion in the excerpt below!

@clive @WIRED Of course if these phones still had user replaceable batteries like they used to, this wouldn't even be an issue. We could enjoy the full capacity of the battery and then at some point just easily pop in a new replacement.

@WIRED @Selena So am I because I’m too lazy to organize anything else I am intrigued by this idea of keeping it within a range, not sure I could get up enough energy to actually adhere to that schedule though

@clive It would be nice if there was built-in functionality to implement the "don't charge above 80%" thing. Is there a thing that does this out there somewhere? I've only seen tools specifically written for Thinkpads

@clive is it excellent? I read it hoping it would mention that iPhones in fact keep your battery in this range all night, only bringing charge to 100% when they expect you to wake, or when your alarm is set. That seems like important info for people to know, IMO.Instead they say phones get to 100% and “trickle charge” all night, hurting battery longevity, a statement that hasn’t been true in iOS for many years.

@clive @WIRED I do actually use the battery charging limit to top off at 85% (I haven't charged to 100% in basically forever), and I rarely run it all the way down to 0 (just a product of how I use my phone, not a conscious choice) - usually sits at a bit lower than 20% when I put it to charge at night.

@tully yeah I am in the camp of “I don’t want to think about this, and if my device fails because I didn’t maintain it, that’s on them”I tend to keep my phones for three years and HEAVILY use them and have absolutely _never_ had an issue with batteries.I suppose part of my issue with the WIRED article is I consider this knowledge non-actionable and it will empower users to make worse decisions.

@jason @tully Possibly true!I still give 'em points for a decent description of battery chemistry and how it's affected by charging patterns, which virtually no stories on battery life ever doI take my small wins where I can find 'em 😂

@TacosAndSunshine @clive Apple just enabled the "don't charge above 80%" setting, but presently, it's only available for the latest phones.https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT210512Which seems really dumb and arbitrary. Implementing this1. should have been done years ago2. Seems like it would take very, very few lines of code#iOS #iPhone #battery
