One of the most conservative Democrats in the House, Jared Golden from Maine, has apologized for opposing a ban on assault weapons in the wake of the deadly shootings in his state. It shouldn’t have to take a tragedy in your own state to come around, but we welcome Rep. Golden in the fight to ban these weapons.

@georgetakei Why hasn't anyone asked him why he wanted other Americans to die? The "I didn't think it could happen here" defense is a horrifying indictment of his character.

@georgetakeiGerman experience shows, that handguns work pretty well in mass shootings, too. We even had an amok killer using a sword. Adressing only one kind of weapon won't stop violence in general. US society have to face the fact, that they not only are the leading nation in mass shootings, but one of the leading ones in homicide in general. There's much more to change than only gun control.@LenaLia

@wauz @georgetakei There's so much more that must change, racism, antisemitism, misogyny, and more are all rampant and now declared in "outside voices" since the far-right's public resurgence. Banning of automatic weapons is a good start, however, just that. Only a start. open access to medical care, access to quality education, including higher education, equitable housing, food availability, all the basics have to be addressed in the States.

@wauz @georgetakei 2/ That said, a population that functions day-to-day for immediate concerns is most likely considered far more easily controlled- up to a point. It's not a coincidence or natural occurrence that the US middle class is vanishing.

@LenaLiaWell, someone posted the idea of a mandatory liability insurance on all firearms in the US. I think, that is something that fits pretty well into the American way. Further: there must be a garantueed minimum living and health care for everyone. Pushing money into benefits is just filling a pipeline. Poor people won't hoard. So every dollar state money in that sector is not lost, but feeding economy. Much better than all money put in the "defense" sector.7 % of the army budget would turn the USA into a prospering coubtry.@georgetakei

@wauz @georgetakei Good morning, I saw that liability post and agree, ppl would have to financially address the potential impact of the weapons. I'd prefer common sense, as in why is a weapon of war necessary in one's household, but the response will be "entitlement" of some sort, undoubtedly. guaranteed living basics would be the only civilized way to address the matter. And many, esp rt-wing, scream "socialism" w/o an understanding/caring of how human basics can be set up.

@wauz @georgetakei 2/ Particularly in a wealthy country. and I firmly believe that control is a huge part of this willful ignorance. How many would refuse certain work and follow their own ethics? far more if basic needs are already met. The Defense Sector in the States has a life of its own. lobbying, political favors, buying from manufacturer in the "correct state". certainly an enormous reason that defense spending is some astronomical percentage of the GMP (34% maybe??). follow the money.

@wauz @georgetakei A better way for all. EU/ Scandinavian citizens benefit. The typical arguments against: US is a larger country (but therefore larger admin to run systems); US is not a homogeneous society ethnically (neither is any other country "now" and why would it matter - w/o opening the debate of ethnic construct ); and the general "socialism is a horrible thing" shout by those who have nothing else to say.

@LenaLiaThe German system of Health Care Funds (most of them are rather cooperatives than insurances) takes a lot of money, as a part of de facto labour costs, but most of the money ends up at the pharmaceutic industry. That is still far away from socialism and provides industry reliable business volume. So any crying over money loss is hypocrisy. Of course, that is part of class struggle: maintaining workforce is a top priority to working class. Some capitalists dream of disposable workers, and that is the main issue of neocolonialism.@georgetakei

@wauz @georgetakei Agreed, many of us have already been disposed of and many more will be.
