2000 election might have been stolen via supreme court depending on how you interpret it, I honestly can't remember the minute details anymore. All I remember was the argument that the state was changing its election laws during the election which is probably usually bad but probably more sensitive to the actual thing being changed not just a change happening

@Moon@shitposter.club I wonder what an alternative 9/11 with Al Gore as president would've looked like.

@SuperDicq I think 9/11 would have played out almost the same, the big question is would we have invaded Iraq. the conventional answer is "no" but I'm not so sure.

@leyonhjelm @SuperDicq before 9/11 there was a neocon think tank plan for the USA to invade several countries and those plans did not hinge on a particular party becoming president.

@Moon @leyonhjelm @SuperDicq most countries with acting military have plans like these for every possible scenario. Somewhere there's probably a plan for the US to invade Russia, China, or even the Netherlands (just for lulz). Doesn't mean this will happen.

@leyonhjelm @SuperDicq @Moon >before 9/11 there was a neocon think tank plan for the USA to invade several countries and those plans did not hinge on a particular party becoming president.Yup, this is true. General Wesley Clark described it publicly:>In Clark's book Winning Modern Wars, published in 2003, he describes his conversation with a military officer in the Pentagon shortly after 9/11 regarding a plan to attack seven countries in five years: "As I went back through the Pentagon in November 2001, one of the senior military staff officers had time for a chat. Yes, we were still on track for going against Iraq, he said. But there was more. This was being discussed as part of a five-year campaign plan, he said, and there were a total of seven countries, beginning with Iraq, then Syria, Lebanon, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and finishing off Iran." Clark regards the 2003 invasion of Iraq as "a huge mistake".I wish more people knew this.

@Moon @SuperDicq @leyonhjelm I don't know the details of that, but the first thing I think of is the "Russian Reset" with Hillary Clinton.I just did a quick search and found this funny tidbit I didn't know:>On 6 March 2009 in Geneva, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton presented Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov with a red button with the English word "reset" and the Roman alphabet transliteration of the Russian Cyrillic alphabet word перегрузка ("peregruzka"). It was intended that this would be the Russian word for "reset" but actually was the word for "overload". (The correct translation would be перезагрузка ["perezagruzka"].) Additionally, the button switch was the type commonly used as an emergency stop on industrial equipment. The button was labelled "overload", not "reset", in Russian. I don't even.

@Moon Yep. I’ve been watching this unfold since the Berlin Wall fell. The Soviets fell, the Russians were briefly ok because they were in financial ruin, and the glow in the dark boys played games in places like Bosnia and Serbia, getting a shit ton of people killed. If not for the Clinton administration fumbling around with NATO there, most Americans wouldn’t have noticed at all. Once Russia started to stabilise, the only delay for renewed government hate was the population inconveniently hated Islam after 9/11 when Russia was a better bogeyman for the arms industry.@SuperDicq @aven

@coolboymew @Moon According to the US constitution, "time and manner" of elections are supposed to be determined by state legislatures. What we have today is a mess of state officials making rules, courts interfering and making their own rules, and even huge county by county variances in how elections are run. And anyone who questions it is an election denier. The Democratic Party has gotten very good at manipulating elections. Even if you believe the 2020 election was on the up and up, the Democrats have stolen a Senate seat and a governorship. At minimum. Using the same exact playbook as the 2000 Gore campaign. After a huge amount of negative press, courts aren't willing to stop them anymore.

@Moon @leyonhjelm @SuperDicq >Even before this I saw the anti-Russia rhetoric ramp up, I am convinced that she was just obeying her masters.I don't remember that, but I don't disbelieve you.>There are plenty of reasons to hate Russia but to these people it solely is about Russia's ability to resist American hegemony, human rights abuses and totalitarianism are okay if you're our ally. That kind of makes it sound like Russia wouldn't be as bad or worse if it held the hegemonic position instead. I personally think it's more along the lines of the bogeyman thing: creating an external enemy/threat to unify against. It's less about fighting that enemy, and more about forcing your detractors at home to fall in line. Heck, if the threat is bad enough, you can suspend elections and ban opposition parties and become dictator for life. It's a classic dictator's strategy, and is why countries like Iran and North Korea have so much anti-American propaganda. It's less about America and more about consolidating and maintaining power in their own country.Disclaimer: I'm not saying Iran and North Korea don't have some valid reasons to fear/hate America, nor that some of the animosity isn't real and can't lead to war/invasion. Also I agree that America is hypocritical about human rights abuses, though to be fair, every powerful country is.

We should be better, and not settle into the cynical view of "well of course anyone with power abuses it". America should not be represented and steered by constitution-violating rogue agencies.Eisenhower knew better, too, with the speech where he coined the term "Military-Industrial Complex" and warned of it as the greatest threat to democracy.

I used that term because he does:>As we peer into society's future, we – you and I, and our government – must avoid the impulse to live only for today, plundering for our own ease and convenience the precious resources of tomorrow. We cannot mortgage the material assets of our grandchildren without risking the loss also of their political and spiritual heritage. We want democracy to survive for all generations to come, not to become the insolvent phantom of tomorrow.>In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military-industrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist. We must never let the weight of this combination endanger our liberties or democratic processes.

@aven I’m familiar with the speech, problem is what “democracy” means today is about as meaningful of a term these days as anything else these newspeak bastards have got their hands on@SuperDicq @Moon

@leyonhjelm @SuperDicq @Moon *Bane voice* For you. They do that on purpose. They're wolves that wear sheep's clothing, not only to benefit from riding the reputation of the sheep, but also to smear that reputation, such that eventually people will see sheep and say "that thing will attack me". Once they've worn out the word to meaninglessness, they move on to another. They intentionally choose words that they want to become meaningless, like "freedom", "democracy", "empathy", "justice", "science", "human rights", etc.We can't let them win by abandoning the words, because then we're on a treadmill of new words that they'll latch onto like parasites.Instead we need to say "no, that's not democracy. You're lying.", or mock them by saying "The Science (TM) is not scientific" or "Our Democracy (TM)".

@leyonhjelm @SuperDicq @Moon then don't declare the newspeak bastards the victor. They may capture the NPCs or the normies, but not us. Even the normies can often "sniff-test" disingenuous usage of those words, but don't say anything because they're either not confident in the subject or reluctant to making conflict of it. Similar to political correctness, they don't fight it, but they have an unspoken sense that something's wrong. This allows the illusion of consensus that the newspeak bastard wants. But here for us, it looks like both of us know the non-cynical meanings of the words, so we can communicate without the influence of the newspeak bastards.

@newt @leyonhjelm @SuperDicq @Moon Everything I’ve heard starting in the 1980s, including a friend who was part of an exercise that stumbled upon that part of a military base, is that the US has very serious no fooling around men who guard our nukes. Although today this part of our system gets no respect, for officers it’s a low value, high risk thing. As in, it’s easier than normal to make a career ending mistake.See also weapon arming systems including conventional ones, they have to be subjected to certain forces before they’ll go boom. Our nukes also have permissive action links which require submitting a code. And I suspect booby traps if you try to get around this sort of stuff, all of the implosion devices include a hefty amount of conventional explosives, albeit not the huge amounts of the original Fat Man design. They also tend to have tritium boosting of the primary, which due to its dozen year half life requires periodic replenishment. Not that it’s very hard to make tritium if you’re running nuclear power plants, replace the fuel in a few rods with lithium.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Permissive_action_link

@Moon @leyonhjelm @SuperDicq @aven You’re ignoring a more than a century old grudge against Russians that Jews still hold, made even strong when the ones in the Soviet Union gave Stalin and subsequent Slav leadership an excuse to remove them from power and discriminate against that. That’s their enthusiasm about founding of Israel revealing where their true allegiance was. On the other side, Slavs remember how they become genocidal executioners for Lenin and Stalin.

@Rocket @coolboymew @Moon And this is a good thing. The US Constitution was set up to avoid for example Philadelphia and NYC from ruling the country from the beginning. One reason it’s not a Democracy™ and each state has a great deal of power in national elections, especially for the President and in its apportionment the Senate, two Senators for each state. The Constitution also requires each state to be a republic. So it’s easy to cheat in a few states as we saw blatantly done in five “battleground” ones in 2020 with GOPe support or for Georgia a very corrupt deal, much much harder in all thirteen to now fifty. The Democrats today have to fear a repeat of the 1980 landslide as “Biden” is speedrunning the 1970s, something every normie gets forcefully reminded of when they buy food and gasoline.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1980_United_States_presidential_election

@Moon These close elections with lots of mail-in vote fuckery are too commonplace, and no one seems to have the political will to fix the situation.
