The battle between open source and 'sort of' open source is as old as software https://theregister.com/2023/10/27/open_source_vs_sort_of_open_source/ by @sjvn Long, long before the HashiCorp/OpenTofu fuss started, companies were playing games with #opensource projects, and developers were forking the code.

@sjvnI wish you had a little more nuance in the part about Red Hat. _Everything_ Red Hat does is open source. That hasn't changed and won't. There is no "open core" proprietary parts, no dual licenses, no copyright assignment or unilateral CLA with "copyleft for you but not for me". RHEL has never been community developed, once forked from Fedora Linux. But _especially_ with the CentOS Stream changes, it's more open and transparent than ever.

@sjvnI get _why_ people want to lump RH in with the "companies squeezing the ratchet" thing. It _feels_ compelling. But that doesn't make it true. I guess I shouldn't expect much from The Register, but.... I always hope for more.

@mattdm @sjvn It isn't just @sjvn, https://lwn.net/Articles/945912/: the practice is antisocial and nasty and Red Hat should change its approach. On: "_Everything_ Red Hat does is open source", go to https://redhat.com, right click, view source, "Copyright Adobe. All rights reserved." https://www.gnu.org/philosophy/javascript-trap.en.html. I recall emailing you years ago about a fedora laptop preinstall, upgradable nonfree firmware means the job is not done. No reply. You have no published email or else I'd have used that.

@iank @sjvnI will rephrase: all of the software Red Hat makes is open source. Propriety software is used in the business, and I guess in making some of the web site. I don't think any of this new or related at all to this article, though. As for firmware: I agree that having all of this open is the ideal, and a good goal. But I think the distinction between loadable firmware and something you can't see (whether on some ROM or an ASIC) is specious. Meanwhile, people need computers that work.
