This scene is set in 1996, and the context is that this girl, who's helping out a small bishoujo game studio, is trying to convince the person in the apartment, who is their only programmer and who is refusing to work on the game because it'll be made for Windows (he's a PC-98 nerd), to come out and work on the game.

@RustyCrab @BrodieOnLinux @KatMistberg @StaceyAyodele the PC-98 to Windows switchover was just the Japanese version of the DOS to Windows switchover, and there were also plenty of holdouts in the west as well.It's just that in Japan, two things happened. A lot of people were buying PCs for the first time, and NEC was overcharging for inferior hardware. The PDF related has a whole summary of why this happened, and there were a lot of things not mentioned from the video hardware staying unchanged to how nobody else was allowed to build clones. NEC 100% fucked themselves over to the point they sell desktops/laptops in a joint venture with...Lenovo now.

@RustyCrab @BrodieOnLinux @KatMistberg @StaceyAyodele The other important thing to note here is that without Windows, there were 3 main DOS architectures (DOS/V which was essentially a localized version of MS-DOS, the NEC PC-98/Epson clones, and the Fujitsu FMR/FM Towns). DOS programs were written to use direct hardware access, Windows programs used APIs and as a result you could abstract away the hardware differences between the PC-98, FM Towns/FMR, and whatever piece of shit you bought at Wal-Mart back in the day. If it wasn't Windows, Linux would have done the same thing. Or OS/2. Or BSD. In fact as a result of the abstraction, Windows NT/2k works with more PCI devices and western off the shelf software than on Windows 9x on the PC-98.

@Humpleupagus @RustyCrab @StaceyAyodele @BrodieOnLinux @KatMistberg the problem with the x68k is while the video/sound hardware is miles better than the PC-98, you're stuck with a 10mhz 68000 unless you're rich and buy an XVI or the really expensive X68030. You know how the Amiga boomers have shit like the PiStorm or the Terriblefire accelerator that you can get on Github and just make? You don't have that on the x68000.There's some Japanese dude who made his own PiStorm like thing but oh sorry the design isn't open and also you can't even buy it on booth.pm or wherever it's sold it's out of stock :blobcatjoy: It might eventually come one day, I mentioned this on the Discord for it but turns out nobody seems to give a shit about developing it.
