@Alphakilopapa I work in the industry and I don't even get it.In pharmacy, there is "lesser of" pricing - you are always charged the lesser of the cash price or the negotiated discount price. This is OUTRAGEOUS!

@DrChris insurance is such a scam. One doctor told me that it's easier to deal with a patients without insurance than to haggle with the insurance companies.

@DrChris and if you were a piece of shit and the government were on the hook you'd pay nothing. Welcome to modern America. Punish the strong, help the stupid multiply.

@Alphakilopapa Here's how it will play out:"Reverse the charges, charge me the cash price.""We can't do that.""Send it to collections, then."Collections: "Hi, can we negotiate this for 30 cents on the dollar."Me: "OK."

@Alphakilopapa I will never present insurance again for an emergent issue. If I had not presented it, they would have charged me $500, I'd have paid it and submitted it to my insurance and they would have credited by deductible $500.

@DrChris Always ask the price for cash. I've seen price drops of nearly 80%. That was just for blood work.

@souldessin Their claim that "because I have insurance on file they can't reverse it" is what made me dig my heels in. It's bullshit - if they charged me for a lab that wasn't run, they could surely reverse it. They can reverse this and charge the cash price, no problem.

@DrChris does your company provide insurance? If not, you might want to look into a heath share plan. We use one and it's SO much better! I pay up front and they reimburse me. It's insane how much less we pay than insurance. And what's the difference? All of that is administrative cost!!! We could literally cut the health care costs in half by eliminating the insurance companies!

@Peaceandprosperity Yes, in fact I've worked my whole career in insurance in some way (worked for a Blues plan and now in consulting). I've never seen anything as outrageous as this. I have a high deductible plan, so I'm still paying 100% of the costs until deductible is met. However, through insurance it's $1200, cash price is $500. Why would I use my insurance in that case? LOL

@DrChris the health share works similarly, but we found that for a family of 4, the monthly deductible was much less expensive than a high deductible, insurance plan. We also belong to a naturopath clinic, which cut our premium for the health share plan in half! With your plan, do you have to push your bills thru insurance, or can you cash pay and then just submit the bills so it goes against your annual deductible at a lower rate but it still goes against the deductible?

@DrChris I use a medication that cost $110/month in the states, with insurance. We dropped our health insurance when it hit $1700/month! That’s a goddam mortgage payment. I found a pharmacy that doesn’t accept insurance and the charged me $60 for the exact same medication. Three years ago we moved Portugal. Same medication here costs €3! About $3.25. WTF? Health insurance in the states is a SCAM.

@duck No idea how that could hit $1700 a month! WOWI know they went from about $10 a month to around $100 because they patented the delivery device, but haven't seen it that high. Insane.

@DrChris $1700 was our monthly health insurance premium in rural Texas. Blue Cross/Blue Shield. They raised it to almost 2k and we canceled.
