I blame mostly Gmail for the progressive abandonment of emails by professionals (developers included). The absence of threading, a basic but essential feature, makes it almost impossible to deal with large conversations. Same problem with the Google Group interface.

@galdor Not to mention top-posting and the obligation to include the whole thread in your email just in case someone gets added to the conversation at a later date.Oh, and what about the need to always use HTML due to some people using different colours to reply inline? It’s insane.BTW, I recently read that most NNTP servers are defederating from Google Groups due to spam. With some luck, that will revitalise Usenet.

@josemanuel Oh yes do not get me started on basic email etiquette. At least with Gmail, emails are sent with a text version so it's never a problem in a non-web email client.

@galdor Gmail is a bleep in a professional world, which is still dominated (and was before gmail was even created) by Outlook. No program has contributed more to the demise of professional email than Outlook.

@ringtailringo I do not doubt that Outlook dominates the corporate world, but every single small tech company I've worked for/with in my career has been using Gmail (well, Google Workspace) which is magnitude order less painful than Office/Outlook.

@galdor Mmmh, do not know if I find gmail better than Outlook... The questions as such makes as much sense to me as "which kind of cancer would you like?" :)

@galdor Do you have more information on „absence of threading“ in GMail? I'd like to learn more about that. I can find a GMail feature called „conversations“ which seems related. But I guess you mean a real threaded view (tree-like), right?

@darkunicorn Correct. I'm not using an email client if it does not support tree visualization.

@galdor Yes, makes sense. I guess the GMail team considered that too complicated for the user.
