@djm @lcamtuf I'm terrified of poisonous mushrooms. Is that a realistic concern? I've never heard of somebody getting sick from foraging, but also not sure I would

@iagox86 @djm Foraging is super common in central Europe (as in: millions of people do it every year). There are some deaths, but in the single-digit territory, so I think the public policy approach there is to treat it the same way we treat death by lightning or shark attacks. In some other countries, the approach seems to be basically the opposite: foraging is certain death, and only farm-raised mushrooms are safe. I'm not sure it's rational, any more than telling people to stay at least 1,000 ft away from bodies of water on the account of sharks. The vast majority of mushrooms are not deadly, and identification of the safe ones generally isn't hard - you just really want to make sure you have firm positive ID. Mushroom identification books tailored to your region are valuable, because they will tell you what's basically 100% safe, and what might have sketchy lookalikes.

@iagox86 @djm I mean, it's a pretty short list: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_deadly_fungus_species - and most are pretty distinctive from anything you'd want to eat.In particular, 95% of it goes away if you don't pick mushrooms with gills on the underside (although there are some valued edible mushrooms that have gills). White and sickly greenish or yellowish caps are higher risk too.The list of mushrooms that just aren't tasty or might cause upset stomach is longer, but also... you know.
